Default Airgasm

We all like the feeling of the wind in our face.
It the wind is 120 MPH it’s a bit weird but if you jump into the air flow your body will float around suspended on a cushion of air. With slight movements in your arms or legs you can turn right or left, slide back and forth, up and down and with a lot of practice do flips and other neat stuff.
I started skydiving in 73. Free fall duration was limited to your jump altitude. At 7,300 feet you could free fall for 30 seconds before opening. Then you have to repack, wait for the next lift, load 40 pounds of gear on your back, jam yourself into a crowded airplane that sometimes seems ready to fall out of the air for one more 30 second slice of Airgasm.

With these freefall towers the time is almost unlimited. Even old farts like me can do it. The hardest part of the whole deal is climbing up two flights of stairs. Like anything, to develop proficiency, you need practice “in situ”. Almost 25 years sense my last jump after 1 minute in the tower I was able to remember how to fly stable, turn right and left, float up and down. After 5 minutes, with coaching, I flew on my back, with control. Something I had never experienced when jumping from a plane or chopper.
Put this on your list of things to do before you croak.

Monstro,
Flying Whale…….

Looks very cool. Where do you find those things? I did one static jump several years ago, but thought the expense and hassle that you describe was more than what is was worth. That thing looks like the ticket.

Cool... Might give that a try one day, kinda surprised it only takes 120mph to float your body. Wonder if it takes more fo us fat guys.

There's one near me. I think the rates work out $5 a minute.

I did that at Action Park in north NJ as a kid. It was a blast -- literally.

But I was glad that when it was over, I fell 4 feet to the mat and not 1000s of feet to the earth. I'm a puss.

Afishinado,

If you know an object's Terminal Velocity you can float it with an equal amount of air. I beleive for humans TV is in the 110-120MPH range, thus 120MPH wind will float you...

Never tried a freefall tower as I've never even seen one.
Been wanting to jump again for my 75th birthday, so maybe I'll try to find a tower and save a few bucks this time around.

That's only the terminal velocity in the standard "freefall" configuration. If a skydiver makes himself more aerodynamic, terminal velocity could approach 200 mph. How do you think that late jumpers from the plane manage to catch up with the early jumpers to form those linked groups?

wj,

Um yeah.... I guess common sense really isn't that common after all? I sort of figured that everyone would understand that is "free fall" not a power dive.. If you power dive in a "Free Fall Tower" it sort of would negate the whole purpose, would it not?

You can find the closest by googling sky venture. I flew the one in Orlando. TB,s stomping grounds. Figure spending about $50 for two 1 minute sessions. Get the DVD to bore your friends with.
Garett, they will let them go in naked…….after hours. Make like the love bugs.

I'm going to Orlando soon and just might have to check that out. I've wanted to do it for the past couple years but never make time. Has anyone been to the Sky Venture in Orlando?

I actually saw girls doing this nude. That wind does some very unappealing things to their silicon enhanced areas

They are building the latest freefall tower right down the road from us as I write this in Raeford NC . Pretty interesting looking construction on the building. its supposed to be using the latest technology for the construction and wind handling capabilities I think it is going to be finished in the fall of this year. It ought to go pretty well here with Ft Bragg so close......Mark

The guy that invented it is a big boater and pilot. His last boat was a 65 Marlow. I sold him a 64' Navigator way back when. He still owes me money for shipping his liferaft and other stuff to him....grrrrr He gave me a stack of tickets to the SkyVenture in Orlando. Must be 200 of them, never used them though, and that was 7 years ago so I don't even know if they are still good. Looks like a blast. He also invented the SkyCoaster which is the huge sling shot swing thing. http://www.skycoaster.com/home.html
He has a couple of L39 Jets too. Aside from owing me money he's a pretty cool guy.
