Default Filthy office break room/kitchen?

Stop by to see the wife at her work. They have a nice office kitchen, dishwasher, microwave, sink, large fridge, that is always filthy. I would hate to see some of these peoples houses! How would you fix that? Total employees is about 25.

If that's the case - there's a discipline issue with management.

Kind of like the old saying, "The fish rots from the head down".

You should offer to clean it up for them.

Easy, next time you visit-drop off her apron, cleaning mitts and some detergent. She'll thank you for it when she gets home.......

Haha...good one Tireless. Does the office not have a cleaning service come in? Is it possible that of those employees that use that room, nobody wants to work overtime to clean the place without extra compensation? Maybe your wife could send out a mass email or something. I'm unsure what results this would produce but she could try. Not to be an @ss but how long did you stew on this kitchen cleaning deal before you reached out to the cyber fishing community for help?

I agree, doesn't the office have a cleaning staff? If so, they should be fired!
"You" could always call the health board and ask if they could stop by.

It's not the office's cleaning staff's job to clean up affter the a$$hole employee's!

I work with lots of lazy employee's who pull the same CRAP and I happen to talk with most of the cleaning staff about it (since I am not "above" them like most of the other office princess's are...) it's not in thier contract most of the time... If you mess it up... CLEAN IT UP!

Lock the door.

If they don't appreciate it enough to keep it clean. They don't need it!

I went as far as printing and laminating a warning label for on the microwave...

It went something like this...

"Warning, This is NOT a Self Cleaning Microwave Oven. Due to laziness amongst fellow employee's, use this filthy Microwave at your own risk"

Once upon a time I used to clean up... I got sick of being one of three who actually cleaned up after 30+ PIGS.. And I just stopped using the lunch room period.

Such a shame people are so lazy and come off with "That's not my job" well fine, you don't need a lunchroom either!

The blame fits squarely on all users of the space.

If they worked for me the orders would be clean it once on my dime. From that point on it's your dime (within reason of course) or I'll turn it back into money making space. With office space ranging from 4.00/sqft and up, I can think of better uses of it.

It could be part of the cleaning crews job BUT someone's going to pay for it one way or the other.

I stewed about a 1/2 day.
Custodial services are brought in 1/week.
I may plant some plastic roaches, like 4 dozen.

I managed a facility with about 30 workers and every day the employee bathroom would be trashed. After being nice and trying to get people to clean up after themselves, i put a padlock on the door. If you wanted to use the washroom you had to pay for the cleaning service to come and clean up or pick a shift to clean. I had some idiot cut the lock and break the hinges of the door, when he was given a bill for the damages it was more than his pay for a 2 week period. Needless to say he refused to pay and was fired. The washroom was kept very clean after that incident.

1) You dont work there. It's none of your business. dONT STRESS YOURSELF.

2) If it bothers your wife (who does work there) she could speak to management about it.

We have had similiar problems in my office. We take turns with some minimal procedures. Every night, any dishes in thwe kitchen that are not washed and put away are thrown out. Every week or so, all food that is not name-labeled and recentkly dated is removed from the fridge and thrown out.

Food left on the table unattended is fair game. This avoids confusion since many of our staff bring in goodies to share.

3) Good luck!

Throw a bluefish in the microwave on high for 10 minutes. That always gets the point across.

We HAD the same problem in my office. I swear some people just don't have any respect. It has already been said, but this is a management problem. I started by posting notes in the bathroom and kitchen area, for example: "Management is not your maid, your momma, or your bit*#. Please clean up after yourself!" This worked for a little while. One of my biggest peeves is when someone doesn't replace the empty toilet paper or paper towel dispensers. I then had to publicly embarass whoever th culprit was by calling them out in front of everyone for being lazy. Haven't had a problem since, and new employees are always warned.

where I work each Thursday the fridge gets emptied (by an anonymous employee) of anything that looks dubious in nature and if there are dirty dishes in the sink at the end of the day they are trashed. Literally. Only issue is if someone uses your stuff and lets it full of penicillin on their desk and YOUR stuff gets thrown out. People take notice though and try a little harder.
