Default Anybody do Garden Railroads? Cool pictures....

My wife and I flew up to Pennsylvania last weekend for a short visit with my parents. My mother is a PA Master Gardener and my father has gone a little crazy with the garden railroad. Overall the garden railroad is 200'x60' and I think he has around 2000' of track so far. They started working on the graden railway about 10 years ago. It's frickin amazing! Now my wife knows "where I get it from" with some of my projects.

That's no worse than some of our boats...... Man's gotta have SOMETHING to occupy his time..... Otherwise it's liquor and wild women......... And we know where that gets us.....

Thats cool!
Hollywood might be calling, want to blow it all up for a movie. It looks that realistic!
The close up pic I thought of the movie, Stand By Me. "TRAAAAAIN"!

Fun stuff! I'm the same way with water features.

I could have pvc spittin' water all over the yard and fountains and stuff so I know the interest.

Wow my Dad would love that. I'll send him the link. I'm curious if it's difficult to maintain being outdoors...especially in the PA climate...must be a lot of upkeep! Pretty cool...thanks for sharing.

i spent some time up in the fredericksburg virginia area a few years ago, and there was this one neighborhood that had three or four houses that had huge garden railroads....

one even crossed the road and continued in a neighbors yard....was the most amazing thing i ever saw on that scale......lol, took us extra time to work around the rear easments (we were rebuilding the entire infrastructure for cox cable) but was really cool to experience that "love of the game"

Too much space, too much time, and too much money. With all of the time, effort, and resources they put into their backyard toys they could have bought a hull, sanded it down, painted it, out fitted it…

Thanks for the pics. That is very cool. Seems like a full-time job just doing the gardening and track maintenance. That's dedication!

That's the coolest thing I've seen all day.

How does it hold up to the weather?

Some answers:

* The track is designed to stay outdoors all year and it just 'floats' on the gravel track bed to avoid problems with freeze/frost heaves. I'll try to find a picture showing the layout under 2 feet of snow. They sometimes have problems with chipmunks and ground hogs taking up residence in the tunnels, but their Schnauzers deal with the critter issues.

* My father has about 50 structures/buildings that can be placed on the layout that are designed to withstand the elements to some degree but they are stored indoors and brought out on 'train' days to minimize the adverse affects of being outside 24/7.

* During the 'growing' season from May-Sept my parents have to do some weeding, but there's so much ground cover planted around the layout there's not much room for weeds to get out of control. I can't imagine maintaining a garden layout of this size in Florida. It would be a nightmare.

* Every year in late June or early July they open up the layout to the public for a weekend and they solicit donations that fund the local garden railway club. If you're in the Allentown/Bethlehem/Nazareth area and are interested in seeing the layout in it's full operational glory, I can provide additional details.

* My parents are very active in their retirement and they enjoy RVing, tandem bicycle rallies, gardening and the garden railways.

I am an HO model railroader in the winter months and have always liked the big outdoor stuff.

Your folks have a truly wonderful layout, I might sell the boat and build one in my yard.
