Default How Many Pilots Here?

I am in the process of getting my private pilots license (as it is commonly called)

The US population is just over 301 million estimated (don't know if this includes illegals)

There are only around 600 thousand pilots total (all US Airmen certificate holders...not just private)

If you do the math, that means that .2% (point 2) of the entire population are pilots. Even if you take away 100 million as being children, that still leaves you with .3% of the "eligible" age as pilots.

It seems to me, in meeting many fellow boaters, that the percentage of pilots FAR exceeds the normal percentage.

How many other "US Airmen" (pilots) out there?

Have my private pilots license (single engine land). Have not flown in close to 6-7 years though.

Learned in a Cessna 152 - thank the lord neither me nor the instructor were fat!!!

I still remember my first solo - I commented to my instructor that it was pretty crowded up there and he replied "Don't worry, as soon as you announce that you are a student pilot doing your first solo, it will become pretty empty up there" - he was correct.

I have a private pilots license, (airplane single-engine, land), with just over 200 hours PIC. About half my time is in Cessnas, and the other is split with a few hours here and there in Pipers, Beechcraft, Mooney, Lake, and a Maule. I also have 30 hours in a two-place ultralight and the certificates for that.

I havent flown in two years, though, since moving to the tropics. I sold the ultralight to move. Been thinking how nice it would be to get current again and fly down here, though.

It would have to be a low-tech airplane, easy to maintain. I got VFR just about every day of the year. My sons gave me an hour's aerobatic flight in a Waco biplane a few years back as a Fathers Day present, and I think an open cockpit here would be a real hoot.

I was always intrigued by being able to fly by myself. What does it take nowadays, post 9/11 to obtain a pilot's license?

Big bucket of money. Not any fun on east coast. Still fun if you can do it in the country. FAA has gotten very nosy with the medical part. For instance, had any form of counseling with the wife lately? How about any type of traffic violation?

Have you looked into a sports pilots license? No medical is needed and it could be significantly cheaper. Although you are limited in what aircraft you can fly and only one passenger but it will allow you to see how you like flying.

Military, charter, corporate, and now government. My best job ever was flying a Hawker for a fish company out of Lima, Peru for 3 years in the late 90's. 13,000+ hours and I still love flying.

In the corporate and charter world, the saying is that the money is in the back.

I have been flying 21 years.( private single engine-land). I own a Decathlon and enjoy aerobatics
and just flying down the beach on a nice day. It does not get much better than that.
