Well, last night was interesting
So, Sunday was a normal honey-do day with some simple chores and occasional checks on THT to see all was running well. When I finally took a break I started noticing my chest was a bit tight and I was short of breath. Next thing I know my heart is beating like a jack rabbit and my entire body has become numb. So, (after an act of congress) my wife convinced me to let her take me to the ER – I’m not one for hospitals!

When I arrived at the ER my initial blood pressure was 188/114! I tell you it felt like my head was about to explode. Once admitted, I had an EKG, Chest X-Ray, CAT scan of my head and a blood test to find what might be causing the blood pressure attack. After 3 hours lying in the ER room they gave me a pill to lower my BP and wanted to keep me overnight. I refused the overnight stay with assurance I would see my Doctor today and get on medication, which I did. Bottom line at 1:00am I was released, but I was still a bit concerned. The conclusion was “Severe Hypertension”!

Anyway I’m concerned but doing a bit better.

This note is not so much about Wiley’s “thinking he was a goner” experience so as it is what happened while I was lying in the ER with my wife beside me.

Around 11:30pm we overhear the hospital dispatch from Paramedics saying they were bringing in two girls, one non-responsive, both over-doses from drugs and alcohol. When the girls arrived by ambulance one was placed in the area next to me (separated by that curtain they use). They wheeled her passed us and she looked near death. She kept throwing-up and screaming so the staff placed a catheter in her and went on red-alert. Not pleasant. What was most shocking about this? The girl was only 13 years old!

It turns out the 13 yo girls sister was the other girl admitted in another area. I heard the staff talk that the 17 yo was much more serious (critical condition). So, now we have 13 and 17 year old sisters both in the hospital from drinking and drug overdoses, Xanax, marijuana and bottles of rum from what was reported.

So, tough night for the girls and their parent’s right? Well, mom strolls in to visit the 13 year old. Mom looked like she polished off a few down at the low-life grill herself. After looking at her 13 year old she said “I got to get away, I need air” and she went outside. Here this woman with 2 kids in the ER, one near death, and she “has to go get air”, leaving her kid alone while she was screaming – let me tell you my blood pressure again went through the roof.

End of story? Not yet. In yet another curtained room next to me is wheeled on by paramedics a 17 yo white male. The diagnosis was again a drug alcohol overdose but in an unrelated incident from the girls. This kid was so bad they had to strap him in and drug him out. We negotiated with the nurse to get me the heck out of there and she agreed.

On the way of the ER we saw “mom” outside acting as if she couldn’t believe what “she” had to go through, meanwhile her kids that could have used some comfort we’re suffering inside all alone. I didn’t make it obvious but shook my head at her and wondered if her actions are why her 13 and 17 yo girls are near death from an OD. Ya think? Sad!

Not sure of the girl’s final outcome but this was a first for me to experience the problem young kids are having with drugs and alcohol. I guess the days of a few beers with the buds are passé.

As for Wiley? Well, I begin my LOTREL and other treatments tonight. Doctor said I should take a break from the PC for a long while. See... I told you I was stessed!

Take care all

Aaawwww, Wiley, sorry to hear that you are having health what the Drs. order and you will be back to feeling well soon, I hope! That is really sad about those gals...sounds like they have too much unsupervised time on their hands. Mom needs to get a grip and start acting like the resposible parent she needs to be for her family!

RE: Well, last night was interesting
You see all kinds in ER's - shame on the parents....

You may want to check out on of the Mayo Clinic's "executive wellness" programs. They check you out 9 ways to Sunday, if you know what I mean. Every crook and cranny ;)

It's expensive, 'round $4k, and insurance won't cover it, but it's worth it for the piece of mind, or at worse an early diagnosis, which dramatically increases your survival chances.

Relax, and have a drink!

Think about the ER staff, they go through that everyday, everynight day after day after day!

Re: Well, last night was interesting
Yeah, hospitals are pretty scary places. Sad thing is, things like what you witnessed happen dozens of times each day across the country. Hate to see that happen to such young kids. Now - on to the lecture! Glad you ended up OK, but you'll need to pay attention to your BP from now on. Listen to what the docs have to say and i'm sure they'll tell you to cut down on salt, get more exercise, etc., etc. Tell your Admiral thanks from all of us at THT that she got you to listen to her.

Hope you start feeling better Wiley..... start eating right and exercising, you won't regret it.

As for the kids.....bad parenting has become an epidemic in this country.....we need to start throwing parents in jail for the bad deeds of thier children.

That woman "needed some air" huh? far as i'm concerned, she is wasting good air.

Re: Well, last night was interesting
Man that experience will surely open yer eyes. Just reading it makes me glad I got away from the drugs....not so much the alcohol as I do enjoy a few from time to time. It's a shame that parents let it get outta control and when their kids need them the most they just, "need to get some air".

As for you Wiley, take this as a sign and take a break. Yer health is more important than THT.

Get well soon! :)

Wiley, as a father of 4 that story really breaks my heart. I could go on and on but will leave it at that. I am fairly strict on my kids 3-11 years old. Sometimes I think I am too strict.

In regards to yourself, I am sorry to hear about your health issues and hope that you get better. It sounds like the ER is not the place to go to if you have high blood pressure though.

Try to keep dem headrushes at bay as much as you can. As for the kids? The world would probably be amazed how much better our children would be with a daily kiss and a hug and a "I love you". It's sad, but those two kids probably never received any of the three.

Re: Well, last night was interesting
Wiley time to spend some time on a boat rather than loking at computer screens about boats. You have an open invite any time the mood strikes. You look to be in too good shape for the BP nonsense. Do what the doc says and get it down. Mine was 122/73 ay the Dr. the other day. I have lost 100 lbs since November (not the you needed to lose weight) I feel great, if it weren't for my anke (that requires surgery) and I amj ust about off all my meds - the diabetes meds are gone and the BP pills are cut wayback. If I can do it, anyone can

I went through the stress problems a few years ago. Had to learn to leave some of the business issues at work (not easy to do). You will get better.

Welder ,

Congrats on the new grand daughter. She will steal your heart.

RE: Well, last night was interesting
Well, Wiley, with this crew it was just a matter of time. We have been badly behaved and you have been a great parent to us all. Now it is time for you and the Admiral to kick back and relax. A real shame about what you had to witness in the ER. I sometimes see things like this and wonder, what chance does a child with this kind of parenting have in this world of ours? My kids have always been encouraged to bring their friends home with them. The grocery bill may have been hard on the mastercard but the rewards have been priceless. And speaking of priceless, so are you. Take care .... please!

Dan & Sheila

PS Lester, congratulations. Your little one is in good hands.
