Big Country

Market Street, San Francisco, 1986.

Sweet smell of hash was overpowering, but the music beat it out.

Awesome band. Finsihed way too early.

ZZ Top, Stokely Athletic Center, Knoxville, TN around 1985 or so. Killer stage show with "Eliminator" and "Afterburner" sets which changed in the middle of the show from an old car dash to one like the space shuttle.

Fuzzy guitars, disappearing acts through lots of smoke, and a great laser show to boot!

Ah haw haw haw haw!

Oh boy, I've got a number of best....all in different catagories.....seen far to many band to have just one.

My dates could be a little off:

Pink Floyd - 1973 Hamilton - best party ever before the gates opened
Led Zeppelin - 1980 Seattle - most pure rare energy
ZZ Top - 1972-73 Toronto - raised the roof better then all the rest
Jethro Tull - 1974 Toronto - best time ever
Ted Nugent - 1975 Buffalo - loudest band ever
Rolling Stones - 1977 Buffalo - best snatch shot ever
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - 1974 Hamilton - best funk ever
Electric Light Orchestra - 1974-75 Toronto - best light show ever
Genesis w/ Peter Gabriel or Yes - 1973 Toronto - best psychedelic show ever
Johnny Cash - 1978 Hamilton - best sound quality ever
BB King and a cast from other bands - 1980-81 Kelowna BC - best live on stage jam session
Canned Heat - 1980-81 Kelowna BC - most appreciated seeing ever
April Wine - 1974 through to 1996 All over the place - tightest band ever....leagues above All the rest!
Rush - 1972-73 Port Dover - best time back stage
Alice Cooper - 1973,74,75 Toronto - best stage shows ever
Blue Rodeo - brother-in-law used to be their light man, Owen Sound - best birthday party/ bush bash band ever they also had great house parties
Great Lakes Jam Festival - 2004 Meaford - 3 days of the absolute best seats possible
Sars Benefit Concert in Toronto - 2003 - best and biggest birthday party I will ever have!!!
Ramones - 1974-75 Toronto - quickest band to be BOO’d of the stage 1 ˝ songs

The list of bands above are probably about 1/15th of the bands I’ve seen at least once! I've seen A LOT of bands! ! !

Pink Floyd - The Wall was hands down the best

One of the most memorable for me was before concerts as we know them today. 1967 (I remember because I hadjust got my drivers license), at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, NJ (long gone) The Temptations.... Was pretty wild for a 17 year old white kid in the sixties! Champagne flowing, dancing on table tops.. Never forget it.

December 1978 - Grateful Dead at the Miami Jai-Alai. Got the "whole experience". Played for over 4 hours and only about 3,000 people. Close second was J. Geils Band in 1980 or so during the "Sanctuary" tour. Didn't hurt that we were in the front row for that. Man!

Been to so many shows, hard to say. John Hiatt, 1999, State Theater, Portland Maine, all by himself with a electric bass drum and electric guitar. By far one of the most underrated singer/songwriters of all time.
Another would be Jonny Lang, I dont remember what year, again at the State, he was just really starting to get known, smokin blues guitar player, awesome performance, more power in his voice and stage presence than any other performer I've ever seen. At the end of the show, the rest of the band had left the stage and he stood there, holding his guitar above his head, in awe as the whole place went absolutely nuts. Not a single person was sitting down. What a show.

All depends on what we call "best". For just pure awe was the 1994 Pink Floyd Division Bell tour (saw them 6x that tour). I couldn't believe it but Journey, 1996 without Steve Perry, front row center..they jammed for over 2.5hrs with no breaks. Roger Waters, 2002 at MSG 5th row.....talk about an incredible way of conveying emotion....it was awesome...he really had a killer set list.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only hard core rocker who thought Journey was awesome in concert. I never saw them without Steve Perry, but those guys really kicked a$$ on stage and had talent beyond most any band in the business.

Garett, I never had you figured for a rock guy, especially one who would recognize the talent in April Wine. Those guys were really good and many never heard of them. Maybe you and I should just stay on rock topics.

Oh yeah, you'd have to be a real redneck to like Skynyrd! I hate to admit it, but I never did get the chance to see Skynyrd in concert, with or without Ronnie. Too bad.

Saw a LOT of April Wine, great choice. Also up there with my bests were the Dobbie Brothers and again lynyrd skynard. Great concerts. I also have to admit that I was "forced" to go to a Tina Turner concert. Not my favorite, but she does put on a great show. My evening was made when to my surprise Joe Cocker opened the show for almost two hours. He still looks as bad and sounds as good.

In 1950 in New Orleans, I was a 17 year old sailor, the bill of fare was....Nat King Cole (he had a cast on his leg), Sara Vaughn and the Stan Kenton orchestra.

Second best concert was in about 1985 in Orange County California.....The Manhatten Transfer.
