Default This is surprising - never heard of the guy!

Carlos Slim Helú
Net worth: $53.1 billion

On March 29, Mexican telecom titan Carlos Slim Helú quietly slipped past value investor Warren Buffett to become the second-richest man in the world. Slim is worth $53.1 billion, compared with Buffett's $52.4 billion. He is also breathtakingly close to passing Gates, currently worth $56 billion. The gains come thanks to a strong Mexican stock market and the performance of his wireless telephone company, América Móvil. The son of a Lebanese immigrant, Slim made his first fortune in 1990 when he bought fixed-line operator Teléfonos de México (Telmex) in a privatization. A widower and father of six, Slim is a baseball fan and art collector.

Mr. Slim sounds like one fat cat! Who would have ever thought you could make that kind of money on a Mexican phone company? Just goes to show that there are a lot of opportunities out there if you're smart and willing to take a chance or two.

Yep, can't criticizise him or Gates. Both recognized an opportunity and grabbed it.

Definition of luck "when opportunity meet preparedness". Always be prepared for your opportunity and you too will get "lucky"!

He didn't make all this money by investing...he just charged each of our 20 million illegals 2655 dollars for a free ride across the border.

As you can probably tell my by humor I have no issues with jokes - ceiling fans, tats, Adam, etc. But why do jokes have to have a layer of political overtone to it - there's plenty, and I mean plenty, of opportunity to have fun without it.

No, I can't tell that. THAT joke had a political overtone, so you have a problem with it because you disagree with my political views. I make alot of other stupid jokes in other threads, so they aren't ALWAYS political. This is a boating site, boating is something we all enjoy, it is supposed to be fun. You're the one being judgemental here. It was a joke, leave it at that!

Why don't you post this crap in the bilge? Who cares about a billionaire living in Mexico? Do you for one minute think a Mexican elite isn't playing the system in that third world country? What's next....a story about Chavez's net worth after he stole the oil fields in his country. Good grief man...go clean your daughters car and get some rest.

Ah yes, the rich in other countries are "playing the system", while the rich in the US are good old capitalists reaping the rewards of all their hard work. They are not "playing the system".

And that is why the likes of pug and tireless will be fed the reward of the the comforts of milddle class to keep them happy, with no hope of truly reaching the American Dream.

The best thing about capitolism, unlike socialism, is that you don't simply get fed the fruits of someone elses labor.
You have to earn your own.

Dang menzies ...... you nailed it. Oh how I yearn for a shot at making middle class.....thanks for the moral support. If I am really lucky I will be able to buy a purdy stinkboat like yours. Until that happens I will be resigned to wearing shirts, pants and hats from the Thurston Howell III Collection.

I think there are more opportunities south of the border in Panama and Mexico and other free markets due to lower taxes and less government regulations. I have friends (gingos) who are doing quite well south of the border and they all claim that once you understand the nuances of doing business in latin America the possibiliteis of success are greater due to less regulations and competition along with a Norte' americana" work ethic.
