Default Trash in cars

Can anyone beat this?

My college daughter drove up to near where we were anchored and joined us on the boat for the day during the holiday weekend.

During the day I wanted to run down to the nearest gas station to get more gas for the jet ski so borrowed her keys and took the dink up to where it was parked.

Put the empty gas can on the floor on the passenger side and jumped into the driver's seat of the car, a Mitsubishi Eclipse, and pulled the seat bar to move it back. No movement, Thought "damn, something else I need to get fixed".

Drove to the gas station with my knees around the wheel. The windscreen was filthy so pushed the wash - nothing. Then noticed a big crack running along the bottom of the glass. Sigh

Get to the gas station. Buy the gas for the jet ski, fill her tanks up (cos that's what dad's do), and bought a gallon of window washer fluid. Filled up her washer bottle and went to put the rest of the bottle on the back seat. Found the reason the driver's seat would not go back - the floor in the back was rock-solid filled with trash up to the seat level on both sides. Went to put the full gas tank in the trunk and it was totally full of crap as well. What a mess.

Am I just being an old fart - or does she need a smack?

It is easy to collect trash in your vehicle. I got a 4 door Tacoma and the back seat always collects stuff. Mostly empty 12 ounce cans of seltzer water.

Look at it this way - she will never get a littering ticket! Littering is bad. You should be proud that you raised her right and she knows that the planet is NOT her trash can.

I throw all my trash in the front passenger side floorboard, and dispose of it properly first chance I get. I am young, and nothing irks me more than getting into someone's car and having to move trash out of the way to get my feet comfortable. I know people that drive $100k cars I wouldn't claim, because they are too dirty. Like above, it's all in the raisins'!

Both, a smack and praise. What effort does it take to remove the garbage as it comes about? I would have to think her car would look somewhat like where she lives and her bedroom. But the up side is she isn't littering, man I hate litter bugs!

No smack needed ~ just a fatherly reminder that she needs to be respectful of herself AND her vehicle. Keep it cleaned out, cleaned up and make sure ALL fluid levels are where they need to be so that it will run better and get her where she needs to be. Also - make sure she knows the basics of car maintenance.

It's easy for young people especially to "live in" their vehicles. However, I'm sure not too many of them would actually LIKE to "LIVE IN" their vehicles....

Hang in there Dad ~ she'll get it figured out.

That reminds me.. I really need to clean out my car!

I spend too much time cleaning the boat to have any energy left to devote on my car... Besides after doing car shows for years, I am sick of cleaning cars!

A good talking to will probably suffice... In my case, my vehicle is my mobile office and I never know when I'll have a client inside so I keep mine as clean as possible.....

I good father would have her car cleaned up for her. IMO. She's young and learning and living. Appreciate every day you get to have with her and do everything you can for her. IMO.

I force her to do the Jiffy Lube thing every 3-4 months - not just for the oil but to make sure the coolant and other stuff is right (she has them call me when finished for the credit card!). Thing is Jiffy Lube will give the inside of the car a quick vac etc. But I'm guessing she doesn't get that part of the service once they see it.
She'll be up in a couple of weeks, they I will snap a couple of pics before we both set about cleaning it out.
We have full no deductible glass coverage so I need to have that done as well.

I never signed up to running a fleet!

Menzies, are we sharing a daughter? Mine is EXACTLY the same. Her car is like a rolling filing cabinet/trash can. Gotta be a generation thing.

This one strikes a nerve. Do not clean it up for her. In my opinion the best thing you can do is teach her that it is her responsibility to keep it clean. If you clean it, she will only get it dirty again, knowing that eventually it will upset you and you will clean it for her again-human nature. Wouldn't put it past her to chuckle with her friends when it gets dirty again saying something to the effect that you haven't gotten around to cleaning it again. (harsh and selling your daughter short, but she wouldn't be the first)

Having garbage that bad in the car could also be a safety issue/at what point does that trash become a projectile in a sudden stop.....the half bottle of water than can no longer be thrown on the floor and ends up on the back seat.

I would tell her that she will be judged by others based on her car...the cop, neighbors, acquaintances, etc. Just like she is judged on her appearance. If she gets in the habit of keeping it clean on a regular basis, its such a non-issue to keep it that way.

Already keeping it this way has cost her...when it goes to jiffylube, they already don't vaccume and clean the windows because they can't and she is sending the message to them that she doesn't care about the car. So why should they?

Agree with above...sounds like my wife's car...no matter what I suggest, mention, or imply, it's always a mess. Only time it gets cleaned up is when I do it myself. Just don't get it...

...and I'm the one driving around the old beater minivan while she gets the nice TrailBlazer...

...of course I get to drive the boat though, so I'm good!

As a father of four I have to say................

If trash in the car is the biggest problem you have with your daughter....................

VERY WELL DONE MOM & DAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take a moment and sit back and think of some of the serious problems you could have with a child. I read in the paper everyday about others that do!
