Default 4x4 issue with my GMC Help!

My truck is a 2000 GMC sierra 1/2 ton 4x4 with the push button 4 wheel. The darn thing is locked into 4 wheel! I did not even press the button- I started it and I got a "Service 4wd" on the screen and it is now stuck in 4wd. Fuses are fine- the buttons do not do anything.

I am stuck here- what should I do? I just want to disable the 4wd so I can drive it till I can get it fixed- anyone?

Thanks a ton

Yep- she went into 4 wheel on me down at Sunset Marina today Was gonna disconnect the front shaft but I think that drains the case and it still spins then?

Man I hate this truck. Nothing but problems from day one... my last GMC was bulletproof

I hate to make this too simple, but I assume you tried to disengage the 4WD while going from drive to reverse a couple of times.

I can't imagine it causing you problems to leave it in that shape long enough to get it to a service center. Dropping a shaft would be a PITA.

TN is on to something...put it in reverse...drive it backwards for 20 or so yards...give it alittle gas. 4x4 front ends get "wound-up" if the tires don't "slip". Reverse eases the "wound -upness" (is that a word?)

Thanks guys- the buttons do nothing at all- it doesnt try to do anything.

I did disconnect the battery and it did work- but the second time at the marina it did not work- spent over an hour trying to get it back to 2wd- finally just drove it.

Keep in mind this is all electronic- It is not even attempting to shift. I have a message on my dash screen "Service 4wd" and the control buttons are frozen.

It also shifted into 4wd on its own accord- I never pressed the button.

leave battery disconneted over night and see if it will reset its self.....Before you start it in the morning put it in neutral and then start it up>>>>>Don't start it in park......If that doesn't help try backing up like tn said and try it again....IS it locked in 4 high or 4 low.....

Thanks guys. Went out and took it for a spin- it now says that its in 2wd but is locked into 4 high still. Disconnected the battery for the night.

This sucks for a couple reasons, but mainly I bet this is a high dollar fix and I am 1-2 months away from selling this anways

Thanks. Not sure what case it is. I hooked the battery up this morning- it was in 2wd when I started it- I quickly pulled the fuses for the 4wd system so that it cannot shift on its own accord again- so far so good- even the service 4wd light went out- figure that one out! this thing is JUNK.

I would check the transfer case/front axle fluid if I were you. If you burn up an axle or transfer case you will really spend a few bucks. Very easy to check, but can be very expensive if you don't.

I'd guess you have a soliniod problem. Had that happen to me a few years ago, and all it took was plugging the vacuum line to the shifter with a rubber plug and we were on our way again.

Well I did some more research and from what I gather it is the "actuator" motor- pretty common issue is the word.

$800 for the part alone. I hope to dump this truck before it comes down to that. My daily driver will be ready in another week.
