Found a deal on a pair of all wood garage doors, unfinished.... They are delivering me the panels to paint in advance. The bottom 8 to 10 inches will be in saltwater a couple times a year for a few hours. So I'm thinking a oil primer and two laytex finish coats. Door is made of fir and the panels are mahogany plywood. This is the same door pictured.

eeehk....man those are ruff conditions! Would you not be better served replacing that bottom panel with a panel made out of starboard or something like that???

Before you apply ANY sealant, primer and paint I would be drilling out ALL of the panel's hardware mounting holes and plugging them with epoxy......much like one would do with transducer installation on transoms. A quality exterior finish is only as good as it's weakest point(s), bolt holes, lag screws, sweep screws will be your weakest links.

Under your conditions this is what I'd do, I would apply in this order:
* I'd hit the wood first with three diluted coat of shellac so it enters deep into the pores of the wood.
- 75% alcohol/ 25% shellac (let it dry properly)
- very light sanding just to knock down the fir that is created by the wood getting wet
- 50/50 (let it dry properly)
- another very light sanding
- a third coat at 25/75 shellac (let it dry properly)
- another light sanding if it is necessary.....just enough to remove the rough feel to the wood - be very mindful of not sanding your edges to much
*** These three coats will do more for protecting the wood then any primer top coat will!
- then I'd caulk the seams between the panels and the frame work on both the inside and outside of the panel with a quality 35 yr. latex caulk (small bead...finger wiped)....you want to stop water intrusion.
- then apply your primer sealer
- then apply several coats of your top coat....I would do three.

Personally I don't know what's best to use primer/ paint wise for your conditions, but the prep work above will go a long way in giving you years of service out of your door. If I were to take a guess for a paint, I'd think maybe an acrylic enamel paint would be best for your top coat.

Read this article, it will possibly give you insight on how to paint those doors, It’s what I would use on those doors.

Ray, wonder who Dave Carnell worked for? Glidden?

Me personally I don't like Glidden paints, at least the ones I've worked with....I don't like their lack of coverage! Just like I personally will charge a customer extra if I am using their CIL paint.....man I hate that stuff!!! I'm a Pratt, Para, Benjamin Moore kind of guy.....these products have consistently given me predictable results with IMO outstanding durability.

Why not epoxy coat them like you would if you were building a stitch & glue boat? A couple of coats of epoxy, sand to smooth and then paint with whatever since the epoxy would be the moisture barrier.

Thanks for the tips guys... Going to follow your advice Garrett unless I hear something I like more. I had thought about putting a good coat Kilz or Zinseer that use shellac as a base.... Never thought of using it straight. I have a quart of what I used on my knotty pine in the office......

Garett, Actually I didn’t think about the brand just the advice on using the best (read most expensive) exterior house paint. I always use Benjamin Moore on my boat interiors, not sure why although I musta got advice like yours many years ago.

if itwas me i would use diluted epoxy as the initial barrier coat.....two or three coats and it is vertually waterproof....garetts idea of culking the seams is important.....but inwould use thickened epoxy.....and the hardware holes are the weakest link

Good idea except all of the crap he stores in the garage would float away, including his car........I've seen the interior pics and it isn't pretty.

I've actually had a flatbed tow truck comeand rescuethe car before the water reached it. The worst storms are the Noreasters that happen mostly while I am hiding in Florida.

Sorry.....

Didn't realize that " Location : NJ & FL " meant LBI........

I thought that NJ could have meant somewhere else in the 8,722 sq. mi. that make up NJ.....

Silly me..........

I am somewhere else in NJ... Based on some picts I have from my buds house in Harvey Cedars, LBIgets the same flooding as the rest of the NJ barrier islands get. Silly you....
