Default I met some of the best men in the US today!

Got to work a security detail for the dept. today on the USS Yorktown (maritime museum). They were opening the new Congressional Medal of Honor Museum today. There were about thirty heroes on hand who had received the medal during times of conflict and all of the ones I had contact with seemed like your friendly neighbor. Most acted like what they did was nothing and felt the need to thank the police officers for being onhand instead of the other way around. If they and many others had not done what they did in the past who knows what I might be doing today or what language I would be speaking. I felt like Mike Meyers in Waynes World "I'm not worthy." Other officers that worked the hotel security said that not only were they friendly but funny as hell with some of their stories. One of the those on hand was at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7.

But the saddest part of this is the fact that the museum was redone because several years ago some rat bast@##s broke into the ship and stole the medals that were on display. The stolen items have not been located yet and no one has been charged! Probably already had a buyer before they were stolen.

NBC Nightly News is doing a blog on each living recipient for the next 110 days. Please take a look and see what a true hero is.

I'm at a loss.

What can be said about being amongst 30 Medal of Honor recipients at one time? That's 30 heros.
Man, how cool is that!

I agree, its sad that todays youth ( and most adults ) have no idea what a true hero is. IMO not enough is done for these people, they have went well above and beyond.

Cool does not begin to describe it. I was speechless at one point looking at all them when they posed for a picture. To bad I had a job to do and did not have a camera myself. What made it even cooler was being on the USS Yorktown (CV 10) sitting in Charleston Harbor. Looking at the planes on display and thinking about the men who served so bravely on her that she received eleven battles stars and a Presidential Citation (If I remember what I read correctly). Think about the history of just the ship alone then place the heroes on board and I was allowed to share a small space in time with it all. Did I mention I really wish I had a camera with me.

Those are the people that truly represent the very high standard of what being a true American should be all about.
Unfortunately a huge portion of our citizenry just don't seem to have a clue.

awesome story!

public television runs a documentary series on the medal of honor...usually around memorial day, so it may be coming up. it recounts many of the stories of the heros who have received them. i've seen it 3-4 times and can't turn it off when i see it. amazing stuff.

when i was on active duty (navy) i got to meet a couple of recipients of the medal at various events. truly great men. what struck me most about each and every one of them is how humbled they were to wear that medal. and to a man, they all gave the credit for receiving it to their buddies and downplayed their own actions.

Most of the beer swilling, cigarette smoking American idol watching general population doesn’t get it.

Don't believe it's got much to do with beer swilling and cigarette smoking, because I'll guarantee you that a good portion of those heroes did a good bit of both in their youth.

ain't that the truth.

i spent a year in a military prep school that was run by retired USMC drill instructors. the DI for my company had just about every award given except the CMoH. FIVE infantry tours in nam, half of his left foot blown off, no hair on the back of head because of scar tissue resulting from being burned by napalm. one hardcore, grizzled sob...and he smoked like a chimney and walked through inspecting the barracks every night with a wild turkey on the rocks. i'd say he earned it.

My point was, the average joe six pack sitting on his or her overweight a$$ typically does not appreciate what these men did.

localangler,
What an awesome opportunity you had. I saw in the paper where the exhibit was opening, and it reminded me that I needed to visit the Yorktown next time I'm in Charleston. (My Dad lives in Hanahan.) The last time I was on the ship was in 91' with my Grandfather for the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.
