Default HDTV, Which one to buy?

I'm ready to purchase my first large screen HDTV and need some advice as to what I should be looking for. I'm looking for a unit between 42 and 50 or so inches with the best picture quaility possible. I've always been under the impression that Plasma had the best overall picture quality but could be wrong. So I'd like to hear some more educated opinions and get some advice on what I should be looking for. Plasma, LCD, DLP, 1080p gets somewhat confusing for a low tech guy. Also any recommendations on where to buy. Circuit City, Best Buy ect? I appreciate any help. Thanks

do you have any special considerations such as space, weight, glare, etc? If the size and weight are no concern, you can get a DLP for much cheaper than a similar size plasma/lcd. The DLP picture quality is as good as any of the others, in my opinion. If you want the thin screen/no weight then I would go LCD. They weigh half of what a plasma does and they also have no glare, meaning that you can place the TV anywhere in the room and not worry about windows. The LCD vs. Plasma debate is neverending, so I won't go much into the picture quality. I personally own a Samsung 40" LCD that I bought from Sears and I love it. My buddy has the Samsung 42 plasma and he loves it. SO.....

Coores14, The weight and size are not really a issue. The room seems to be somewhat glare free. I'm trying to check out some info on Cnet and consumer reports. It does seem like each format has its pros and cons. I'm guessing that alot has to do with how well it is set up.

yeah, honestly the debate will go on forever. one side loves plasma, one side loves LCD. I feel that, going from an old tube set, you'll be amazed at the picture that either one produces. And since you say that size/weight isn't really an issue, I'd look hard at some of the DLP sets. For the same price you can get a much larger screen with no decrease in picture quality. in fact, another side of the camp will argue that it is even a better picture. who knows... get what is best for you.

Samsung first.
LCD second.
Forget plasma.
I just bought a Samsung LCD. The best picture ever.
Get the 3 year plan for sure. also get a Monster cable, one cable for everything instead of 4 or 5 cables to connect to your surround sound system if you have one. The quality is worth the difference of cost.

Forget Plasma? That's flat out poor advice, all formats should be considered.

Where did you find a Samsung LCD? Last i knew they ony made DLP sets.

Personally, I think Monster cable products are over-priced and over-hyped. there are plenty of higher quality and cheaper cables out there.

The Samsung DLP sets are VERY nice.

Panasonic Plasmas are nice as well.

But If your talking about quality being worth the difference of cost, Pioneer Plasma is tough to beat.

I ended up with a 46" Plasma Panasonic and we like it. If you have a receiver for your cable/sat TV and you have surround sound, you can save some money by just buying a monitor instead of a complete TV with speakers. Got ours from BestBuy just because it was the cheapest price at the time.

I have a Panasonic Pro Monitor I figure if there good enough for network TV studios it would work well in the home.

Awesome picture!

Plasma or LCD if you are hanging it on the wall. I'd go 1080p but you'd be happy with 720 and probably would not notice the difference.

Plasma and LCD will offer the best picture and there is no debate about that. DLP is really good and you'll be happy with it until you place a high quality LCD or Plasma next to it and see the difference in picture quality (sharpness/color/contrast) and you'll have wished you got LCD or Plasma. I compared my 1080P DLP to a 720p LCD side by side and liked the LCD better. Too bad I was setting it up for my folks.

The important thing to consider is timing. These things are dropping in price every week! I would not buy from a B&M store unless you want to pay the highest price possible. Wal Mart is putting most of them out of business... Abes of Maine is ok but has a spotty reputation, so does my supplier - digital1234.com but if you are lucky and the transaction goes through ok then you'll get a great TV are a great price. I just noticed the Toshiba Regezza (sp?) 42" LCD from my guys dropped to less than $1k. That's a steal.

Check out abtelectronics.com, they are a B&M store, have awesome services and awesome prices. Call and ask for a lower price. It is in my home town too. When my place is finished I will be buying my tv, dvd, vacuum, blender, toaster oven, grill, etc from them. Free shipping generally too, no tax outside of IL, WI and IN.

I bought mine from Visual Apex last December and they were great.

Depends on the room, light (ambient and artificial), type of media you watch (sports, movies, documentaries).

I went through this about 2 months ago. My advice is to research for yourself. Become an expert...then you will know what to look for.
Me? I chose a 42" Pioneer plasma for reasons that may or may not relate to your situation.

Here are steps to consider:

1. Distance from your "favorite" chair to the television.
2. How much light is in the room...and will it "reflect" off the TV?
3. Do you watch sports? Fast Action Movies?
4. Does your cable/satellite box accept HDMI connection?

All technologies have positives and negatives. You need to find out which is best for you.

If you must mount it on the wall then go LCD, but if not then I suggest you go DLP or LCD rear projection. The picture is just as good and it's the best value. You'll save abunch of money which you can use for other accesories such as a dvd player maybe a surround receiver or something. I have the 50" SOny LCD rear projection and couldn't be happier. Just make sure what you want it for, and what you want to do with it. Also remember how far you'll be sitting from it, that will determine how big you can go.

Another store you could consider is Costco. I bought a 50" Maxent plasma tv a couple of months ago for $1,300. I know this is not a name brand tv, but I really could not see the difference in images between the Maxent and the Sony. For me it made sense to get this one and not pay the extra money for the name brand. If this tv lasts me 10 years I am happy. I also think you should get the HDMI cables. I bought mine at home depot for half the price of what the monster cables cost.

I went through the same exhaustive search about 6 months ago. Plasma? LCD? DLP? 42"? 46", 50", etc etc etc etc......

After months of mental girations, I settled on a 46" Samsung LCD 720P. I am absolutely thrilled with my choice. The 1080p upcharge simply is NOT worth it.

BTW, do not waste you money on Monster Cables. Regular old HDMI cables will do the same job perfectly.
