Default Wireless internet help???

Just bought a IBM t42 laptop for traveling with work. I want to be able to use the internet/email where ever I may be. Don't even know where to start. Do I sign up for a monthly broadband subscription from a cell company like Verizon (they have my business cell)? WHat card do I need to get to install in my CPU? WHich services/cards are better or faster?
Thanks

My dad's got an IBM computer and sprint cell service....He got the sprint mobile broadband card and now has internet service and cell service through that one bill. From what I understand, sprint is the best right now for this service when it comes to coverage area and speed. Verizon would be next. If you go to a sprint or verizon store and just mention mobile broadband card, they will be able to hook you up from there. Hope this helps.

It all depends where you are going to use it, and where you have coverage. If your area coverage is good with Verizon, get the new REV. A aircard. They also came out with a new USB aircard. Look at the area where you are going to use it first, make sure you have coverage from whomever your service provider is. Look at the unlimited plans probably the way to go. Hope this helps.

When you say you are travelling with work, where would you need the computer? Are you outside, like at a jobsite? Or, are you in a hotel? Do you just need access at some time of the day? Most hotels these days, in addition to Starbucks, Kinkos and Panera Bread, among others, have wireless or at least ethernet connections that your computer would be able to use right now - and most are for no charge. If you do need access outside, and aren't doing heavy web surfing or emailing, a Blackberry would serve you well.

mobile wireless or "aircard" is the way to go. you'll pretty much have service wherever you have cell phone coverage -- essentially, the aircard allows you to download data (web pages, email, etc) using the same cellular signal that you use for voice communications. i would go to your cell phone provider and see what they have. verizon is $60/mo for unlimited internet access.

most of the newer aircards will also pick up a wi-fi signal. wi-fi is almost always going to be faster than cellular/mobile wireless, so if you're within range (like your home wireless network, or starbucks, panera, etc as greyg8t mentioned) then you can use the wi-fi signal instead of the cellular signal.

all you do is install some software and plug the card into the slot on the side of your laptop.

here's a quick article --> http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a...reviews&id=955

keep in mind that different companies have different coverage areas. For example, verizon does not cover my area of Va but alltel and sprint offer voice and data service plans. Most providers you can go to thier web sites and put in your zip code to find coverage, or if you have a local shop just ask them and they will give you a price on voice and/or data and recommend pc card for your laptop. Good luck!

Iwas just checking into the same thing tonight .Iwent to the Sprint web site and when all was said and done. I believe the best way to to do it would be to have a smart phone with internet abilities and use a usb cord and hook to computor from phone two bird with one payment.

I looked into this with my blackberry and I would have had to have an additional service, over and above my current service for $30 / month (plus the current cable system I already have at home). I decided to pass at this time. http://www.thehulltruth.com/forums/t...ode=1#M1488807
