Default Gander Mountain ?

They are building a new Gander Mountain Store with 5 miles of my house. I have never been to one of their stores, are they anything like Bass Pro Shops? Their Web site does not have a lot of info. on their products. What I mean by that is, there is no way to search for items I might be looking for. Also someone told me they have a shooting range at their stores, is that true?

Gander Mountain came to be what it is through their mail order business from years past. Just like Bass Pro Shops.

They recently put in a big store in Knoxville about 20 miles from my business. No indoor range there, and I don't think they are geared as heavily toward guns and shooting as Bass Pro. We have one of those about 20 miles east of Knoxville.

They sell gun safes under a private label deal with Liberty, so they are presenting some competition for me. I actually delivered safes for them for a while, but no more. Champion Safe Company, who is an illegitimate child of Liberty who is an illigitimate child of Fort Knox which was founded by the ex national sales manager for the company who now builds Browning safes, is in Knoxville also. It would seem a guy who moonlights from Champion is now delivering Gander's safes as he came in and undercut me. Good luck to Gander the first time this guy drops a safe on somebody!

I think they may have had a problem with me as I do sell safes as well as move them for others. Honestly, they may have gotten miffed when I pointed out problems to their customers when I delivered their safes. Little things like the fact they would only open every other try or not at all!

I have bought a few things from Gander, primarily sports clothing, and their prices seem to be competitive. Just another West Marine / BoatersWorld deal as boat stuff go, but nowhere near the selection of either.

We have one close to us. My understanding is that their website is so bad because they sold their web based business and are under a noncompete. The store has a lot of stuff and good prices. It is much less "polished" than Bass Pro. I am not a shooter so I have no idea if they have a range, but the hunting department was pretty big.

I buy a lot of things at Gander. I find them to be a lot cheaper than Cabelas or West.
Sometimes half the price.

Selection is not the as big as Cabelas.

I have never been to a Bass Pro Shop.

They do have an Archery Range for sure but I dont know about a Firearms Range.

Gander long ago sold their mail order business to Cabelas. They no longer can do any mail order, only direct sales from their stores.
Pretty good prices on pretty good merchandise.

Now that I did not know.

I used to buy stuff from Gander Mountain through mail order many, many years ago. Same with Cabela's.

As an owner of one myself, I can tell you a mail order business is not what it used to be. Probably the reason these guys got out of it. Manufacturers have gotten greedy and have cut the distributors out of the picture by going dealer direct. There has been talk for years of a national sales tax on mail order which used to be tax exempt for the most part, and many states have adopted such taxes already.

Pretty soon the mail order places will be gone, so will the specialty shops. Then these superstores will own the market and jack up their prices.

I'll be sure to remind ya'll in a few years that I told you so! I just hope I'm not behind the counter of one of these places when I do!

I just went to Houston last month, and part of it was a shopping trip. I hit the Bass Pro out in Katy, and the West Marine and Gander Mountain over off I-45. I have also been to the Bass Pro in Denver. The Gander Mountain I went to is only about maybe half the size of the Bass Pro, with a corresponding inventory. Actually, for salt-water fishing, the Bass Pro was way ahead. Bass Pro also had a lot more boating stuff. But we got nice diving stuff, and clothing at Gander Mountain and since we were buying similar stuff in both stores ( cargo shorts, bathing suits,) I noticed Gander Mountain seemed a little less money.

I think it really depends on what you want. And there might be bigger Gander Mountains around.

The guy at West Marine was very helpful. He sent me elsewhere for marine binoculars ( Fujinons, great!) and elsewhere for fuel flow system. I think we ended up spending maybe $ 50 at West Marine, about $ 300 at Gander Mountain, and around $ 800 at Bass Pro.

I went to the one that just opened in St. Augustine yesterday. It is a similar to Bass Pro Shops, but they have a less in the way of offshore gear - Strike Zone is still the big dog for NE Florida in that area. They have camping, hunting, fishing, diving, and a lot of Columbia outdoor clothes, as well as an extensive gun section.

When I went it was quite crowded as they are running "Grand Opening" ads everywhere, but I'll probably head back later this summer to see if they have anything else worth shopping for.
