Default Your First Boat

Mine was a 12' Arkansas Traveler jon boat with a 3 horse 'rude when I was about 12 years old.

The boating world has never been the same since!

Alright, surely to God this can't prove to be a controversial subject!

Tell Uncle Freebird about your first love!

I had a 10' john boat with I believe was a 2 1/2 hp johnson when I was 10. We lived in Va Beach about half a mile from the creek. I had a set of wheels that hooked to the transom when you flipped the boat over so I'd load the motor, gas tank and whatever else was going with me on top and haul it down to the creek, man I had alot of fun in that little boat.

Well so much for this thread, I still had a bigger boat than you from the beginning!

I just can't catch a break on here!

You do realize this was just a trick to find out how old everybody is on here?

I didn't own my first Whaler until I was 46. It was a '69 13 footer as well with a 25 Merc 4-stroke. First and only four stroke outboard I've ever had as well.

I bought it from a guy who had restored it as he did that kind of thing for entertainment. I sold it the year after I bought it when some guy made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

Picked up a Whaler 14 Rage last summer to use as a tender for my 58. Now I'm selling the 58 and keeping the Whaler! I figure it is the perfect boat for playing on the river with the young 'un. He's afraid of my WaveRaider!

14 foot Arkansas Traveler with a 10 horse Buccaneer, handed down to me from my Grandfather after he was "through" with it and had his new 14' Lone Star with the 30 Johnson. Me and that little boat toured the world, we just used Lake Ouchita as our starting point.......

Now see? Now we're getting someplace as members of a boater forum, actually talking about boats!

The new owners should be impressed (relieved )!

I can remember being the great explorer with mine, and all kidding aside, I must have been 10 years old myself when I got my first boat. We moved from a subdivision to the country across from the river when I was in 5th grade, and I started school when I was 5. Daddy bought that boat from our neighbor just after we moved.

Even then I wanted a bigger boat and used to run my smaller one at speeds to make as big a wake as I could (sorta like some of you small boat guys ) and pretend I was on a big boat.

My Dad was never into boats much, so most all my boating was self-taught. My jon boat lead me to fishing, waterskiing (on everything but skis for a long time!) and then to duck hunting. In other words, it kept me out of trouble when I was young, but kept me from getting laid until I was out of high school! I reckon that was good too now that I'm older and wiser! Maybe I should have never gotten into women and just did what I did when I was a kid, I MEAN PLAY ON MY BOAT ALL THE TIME!!!

The absolute first boat we had as a family was a 24' Lone Star aluminum cruiser with a Sea Drive stern drive where the prop faced forward. Lots of folks thing Volvo created something new with their new prop forward drive! I hope the new one works better than that old one. I remember Daddy having that thing worked on to reverse the prop. Obviously we had to buy another prop when that work was done, and I remember somebody telling Daddy we could put a different pitch prop on the boat to make it go faster. I told him to get one that would make it go 40MPH or better. I guess speed in boats got into my blood early, and as much as I hate to admit it, it's still there!

15" mfg tri hull w/70 Johnson late 70s or early 80's I forget. Over 30 years, Went on up to 30 ft Cruisers with dinghys and all and am now going back down to trailerable OB stuff. Didn't want to be one of those fat bald guys with a 50 footer to lure some good looking trophy babes to dress up my bridge. Seriously - still have an older small cruiser used mostly these days as a cottage for the family and friends, and just aquired a tailerbale rig from an fellow THTer after a 3 year search. Had as much fun with the family with that MFG and then a 19 ft. Cobia as I did with all the big more $$ stuff. Such is my boating lifecycle....

I got a late start into the boating life (43), my first boat was a Pro-Line 22' Super Sport (new) and everyone told me I was stupid for buying new on my first boat, said I should have bought used to figure out what I liked and disliked, oh well, I had it almost 2 years and sold it to one of my friends for $7000 less than I paid for it,then moved into my current boat. And haven't been happier.

My parents made me learn how to sail before I was alloud to play with my brother (4 years older) so my first boat was a 1983 Laser shipped to Florida from Canada. I still remember the day the tractor trailer showed up with my new boat. After I had become an acomplished sailor, my brother and I shared a 13 Whaler with a 40 Vro johnson.

My dad bought a 16 ft key west when I was 16 or so. I think i put more time on the water than he did. Now we have an 18' Hewes Redfisher. But my heart is in the big boats. Sportfish or go fast.

But my heart is in the big boats. Hatteras or go fast. That's why Freebird is such a smart guy, and the rest of you are just jealous.
I couldn't have said it better myself!

Hey, there's even a logo of a big sportfish on the THT headline, so I reckon W secretly admires big boats too!

PS I would NEVER mess with anyone's quote if I thought it would offend them, but I know captkevin won't mind. He's a smart guy even without my "help"!
