Default How much do you give for graduation?

This will be a 1st for us. A close friends daughter whom I've known since birth is graduating high school and will be attending Yale in the fall. My wife and I are clueless about what is an appropriate amount to give as a gift.

If it makes you feel better, I got less than $100 total from all my relatives when I graduated high school and nothing when I graduated college.

i'll go with the consensus for very close friends or family --> $100

when our babysitter of 3 years graduated last year, we gave her $50...or about what she'd make on a saturday night watching two kids. doesn't seem quite enough when i put in perspective.

The consensious seems to be about a 100. I'm surprized, I was thinking more like 250.

Yesterday and today, I gave my back and hauled her Uhaul trailer 3 hours. I'm figuring after gas and the pain I'll inevitably have tomorrow, that's prob around $250.

well, of course, more is better! if you can do it without busting your budget, then go for it.

I would be inclined to give a larger amount if the graduate had a plan or goal as to where the money is going.
Not just to have cash on hand.

Toss her $100. Tell her you'll double it if she'll
introduce you to some of her new friends.

I am spoiling my grandkids at $200 a pop.......and I still have 2 to go with the precedent now set.

College they get $500, married $500.

With the price of Yale, every penny she has is going to school. Even after getting a perfect SAT score and leaving highschool with a 4.0 Yale is only picking up 6K.

100 But these things vary with local and family custom. We gave a catered (And no one knew it was going to be a large catered event) outdoor party for my girls - the average gift was $50. $100 from closest friends and family that could afford it. Many older people and some cousins with tight finances gave 10 or 20 or a lottery ticket or small gift. We absolutely stated on the invitation that it was a simply our celebration and no gifts were required or expected.

If she is going to Yale the family probably has big bucks - I would guess a Grady White at least.....

For close friends and family

High School = $500.00

College = $1,000.00

$30,000

At least that is what my daughter's graduation (Saturday) is going to cost me. I promised her a new car if she obtained a scholarship....and she did just that so I am actually saving money by purchasing the car (how do you like that rationalization).

FWIW - I asked my wife what she sends and she said........

Kid's of friends - $250 to $500 (depends how close we are to the graduate)

Nieces and Nephews - $500 to $1,000 (depends if they are good kids or boneheads)

Personally....I think $100 to $200 is more than enough........I received $0 when I left high school.
