If it is not a laptop, most any aftermarket DVD/CD Burner should work.

in keyskids defense, Sony makes Vaio desktops as well. But for a laptop, I think the only other option is to get an external drive. Would be cheaper but would have to carry around an extra part or two.

Sorry keyskids, didnt mean to be a pr1ck. Man, I cant lug around exra stuff. Is that sort of pricing normal for laptop parts? Its Sony proper or nothing huh? No aftermarket stuff.

No aftermarket? Take the laptop apart and read who made the Vaio drive. You can buy a much cheaper, better drive for alot less.

Here's a plan. Take the vaio to best buy or circuit city or comp usa, and show the geeks your dilemma. They will show you the options you have for a plug and play replacement. Write down your choices and go home, get on the internet and order one dirt cheap. That's what I did. It's very easy to replace your self. Even a cave man could do it.

You can pick up PCMCIA drives cheap enough if you search the net. Here's an example at around $55 for a burner. You just have to be handy with a small screwdriver.
