Default Someone convince me that NASCAR is a sport

With all the talk of Dale Jr., I have to admit that I still don't get the whole NASCAR thing. More of a spectacle than a sport to me.

Isn't a sport an activity involving physical exertion and or a skill which is governed by a set of rules which is played out competitively?

pugnacious33,
Guess it's best that you don't watch NASCAR then. Some folks just find it more enjoyable to watch the golf channel.

I would agree that NASCAR isn't what it used to be, but it's still the best of the bunch as far as motorsports goes.

If you think it isn't athletic, you're way off base. Try turning off the AC, wearing a business suit, and making laps around your subdivision for about four hours or so. Then multiply that by about 100 and see if you are up to it.

Hell, I can't even stay awake on the couch long enough to watch the whole race any more. I don't know if that's a testament to how boring some of the racing can be, or the fact I'm just too damm old and out of shape to watch a NASCAR race, much less drive a car in one!

I never seemed to have these problems when Dale Sr. was still driving the black car.

I have taken 15 laps behind the wheel of a NEXTEL race car at Atlanta Motor Speedway and can attest to the brutal physical nature of that sport. There is a very good reason why those drivers are thin and wiry.

Who cares? Any sport/event that is BYOB = instant success . . .

. . . even watching the spring blossoms fall.

And with that I think you nailed it; NASCAR is nothing more than a bunch of billboards on wheels going in a circle used as an excuse to drink beer. More than anything, NASCAR is an advertising venue first and foremost. It is not a sport.

It's kinda like calling baseball a sport when even by it's own admission it's America's favorite "past time".

If it's played with a ball it's a game. Real race cars don't have fenders, but at least NASCAR has a handle on what the fans want. What was the Hemingway quote..I'll look it up for you armchair quarterbacks.

Fishing and Hunting are considered sports even though the opponents in these sports don't know they are playing.

All symantics I guess...

There is no WAY you can seriously, with a straight face, call NASCAR a sport.

How is driving a sport? It's driving........

There's no hitting (either bodily or ball), catching, running, sliding, jumping, thinking, skating, hand-eye-coordination, balance, strength, teamwork, throwing, coaching or serious stretegy involved (When thinking of NASCAR strategy, I think of that movie with John Cusak......."Go that way.............................Really fast. If something gets in your way............................turn.")

I'm not saying NASCAR doesn't have its place, but it's not a sport. Neither is fishing or hunting or golf.

Drive a car at almost 200 mph its a sport just to stay in control. I've done 150+ and that was hard enough. Add the strategy of calculating fuel tires air in the grill, no piss breaks that's sporty enough for me. Take fishing my drug of choice, lighten the tackle for the targeted species and you have yourself a sport.
