What may happen is that DEI may be more profitable by not fielding a team and simply become a cash machine from the royalty payments from Sr.'s brand name and merchandising.

From NASCAR.COM site

What subject does Dale Earnhardt Jr. want to talk about?

Members of the media have been invited to a Thursday morning news conference at the JR Motorsports race shop in Mooresville, N.C. However, details of the conference were not provided, lending speculation that it may involve his contract negotiations with Dale Earnhardt Inc.

Dave Moody reported Wednesday afternoon on Sirius Speedway that speculation is Junior and Martin Truex Jr. will drive Nextel Cup cars under the JR Motorsports banner in 2008 with Hendrick Motorsports providing engines.

SPEED will interrupt regularly scheduled programming to go live from the JR Motorsports race shop at 11 a.m. ET for the news conference.

Junior's contract with DEI is scheduled to run out at the end of the season, and he and sister Kelley Earnhardt Elledge have been involved in talks with team officials. Both parties have stated in the past that they want to have the issue resolved by May.

During Media Day at Daytona International Speedway in February, Junior first mentioned his desire to obtain a majority ownership in the company founded by his father, a demand which was repeated by Elledge two months later.

"Fifty-one [percent] is the right number because that gives us control," Elledge said. "We'll take 75 or 95 or whatever we work out. At the end of the day, 51 gives you control. And we want control."

According to the Associated Press, DEI president Max Siegel said DEI has "worked hard to address everything" that Junior sought, without discussing specific percentages.

I think the bigger question is the rumor of DEI teaming w/ Rousch Racing and switching to Ford chassis and engines.

The company and the DE legend was based on his Dad's accomplishments.......personally, I find Jr. to be a spoiled brat and a marginally competent driver.

Not a NASCAR fan, and I don't really comprehend all the hype. But I gotta agree with Tireless and Blue Marlin.....from what I have seen on the tube, Jr. is a baby riding on his daddy's coattails.

I'd say you're missing about 30 years of history.

Sounds like a bunch of rich kids fighting over Daddy's inheritance to me. Too much ego of the wrong type in NASCAR today with all the pretty boys and girls chasing green and TV screens instead of checkered flags.

This is getting to the point of mirroring "professional" wrestling. Once all the cars are the same, the last bit of fun will be gone. Too bad it's not stock car racing anymore.

If you are a NASCAR fan and whether or not you like or dislike Junior, this is big news.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is holding a news conference at 11 a.m. ET from his JR Motorsports race shop in Mooresville N.C.

NASCAR.COM has continuous updates.

11:34 -- "I don't think my fans have to worry about that part of it. I'm disappointed so I expect my fans to be disappointed. Hopefully I can go accomplish the things that I want to accomplish and put on the show that I think I can put on and give my fans more to celebrate. I feel like over the last year or two I've short-changed my fans. I'm hoing to win some races and win some championships to give those guys what they are paying for."

11:29 -- "Ive drove for DEI my entire career, there is something to be said for that. There's a great bond there not only with the employees but with my father's vision. I really wanted to have a larger, more personal interest driving at DEI. Through the contract negotiations we were unable to come to terms that would give me that. We danced around that bush for quite a long time."

11:26 -- "There's a lot of logical scnerios that people are going to put together. We've seen a lot of scenerios over the last couple days that were amusing, some bright and some not so bright. I have a great relationship with Richard and I feel like on his behalf he's stepped his programs up."

11:25 -- "I think there's not one team that's going to lay a dollar figure out there that's going to be different than anyone else. Money is not the issue. It's not about the bigest paycheck. The person that allows me to accomplish what I want to accomplish on the race track and in this race shop is what Im looking at."

11:24 -- "I'm not going to sit down here today and narrow it down before I hear everything that is out there."

11:23 -- I think DEI can be a successful race team. It may not be the exact thing my father wanted but it can still be successful."

11:22 -- "My father's vision...if he was still here I think we would be in a different place right now."

11:21 -- "I think Max and Teresa worked really hard at something and I think myself and Kelly worked really hard but I dont think we were even close."

11:18 -- "Obviously I feel like his vision and he said it himself was for me to have a huge role in the company itself. Through the negotiations, Kelly and I felt like that was not in the cards. It may be in the cards 20 years down the road, it may be something that happens. From a driver standpoint, for what I want to do and what I want to accomplish, this is something that I had to do."

11:16 -- "We obviously want to do things that compliment JR Motorsports and the Busch team"

11:15 -- This decision was based soley on my driving career not my personal thoughts on DEI. We still want that company to succeed.
11:13 -- "It's hard to say whats been the hardest part. Weve had a lot of great things happen but weve dealt with alot of tragedies. I was really sad today. It was hard talking to the employees and the team. I told them I want to run as hard as we can this year. I think we owe it to DEI to give our best effort each week and I hope they feel the same way. I don't expect everyone at DEI to understand how we came to this."

11:12 -- "I'll be happy with whatever decision we make. It would be awesome to continue driving the No. 8 but those numbers are owned by the car owners and I'm sure Teresa would love to keep that number at DEI."

11:10 -- "We have a great relationship with Budweiser and those things will be discussed. I enjoy driving Chevrolets and our relationship is very strong and I think I will be best suited driving a Chevrolet."

11:08 -- "I'm split down the middle, I've drove for DEI my entire career and we've done a lot of great things and I believe that company will do a lot of great things. I'm gonna miss a lot of the great relationships and the individuals that work there and they have my full support. the other half of me is very excited about the opportunities that are out there."

11:07 -- "I will say we weren't really close in getting what both sides wanted."

11:06 -- "As for the fans, please know this is a career decision. I want to thank my family members who are here to support me."

11:05 -- "It is important for me that DEI remain successful and to keep my father's legacy alive. It has been a priviledge for me to drive for DEI and will continue to be through the rest of this year."

11:03 -- "As far as a team is concerned, we will make that decision at a later date. It depends on what team wants me."

11:03 -- "It is time for me to compete on a conssitant basis now"

11:04 -- "Becasue DEI means so much to me I felt it was important that they come out successfully"

11:02 -- "After a year of intense negotiations we have decided it is time for me to move on"

11:01 -- "We are here today at last about my contract at DEI."

11 a.m. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. is at the podium.

I like Junior, but it's all about power, ego, and money. He's disrespecting his father IMHO, but I can't blame him for trying to establish himself as more than just Dale Earnhardt's son.

I'll pull for him... right up until the time he plops his butt in the seat of anything other than a Chevy!

He is the poster boy for an entire sport, auto manufacturer, beverage, blue jeans, etc, etc, etc... he also is a Daytona 500 champ along with many other wins...the kid can drive. The public loves him... People WANT to pay him...BIG!!!

I would leave too. HE IS DEI or any other team he goes to. Sponsorship drives this sport, not wins or position on the track...if it did, explain why a guy that finishes 40th can make more money than a guy finishing 2nd...happened last week.

11:38 -- "She said she wasn't surprised becasue she had read it all night last night. I think that she is focused on keeping the morale of the emloyees as high as possible. I think she is focused on doing what she needs to do in hiring a driver and being prepared for 2008. I told her what my decision was and that is was final and she thanked me for what we accomplished up to this point."

I truly believe he would be a completely different driver if he was in a black Bud Select RCR #3. It's all about team chemistry and karma.

DEI is a different company now than it was when when Dale Sr was running it. Cant say I would blame him. I dont think he is disrespecting Sr by going his own way. It was the same thing with Sr, his way or the highway. Jr is going his way.

I am with you HOTSPOT. 2008 - Jr drives a #3 black and red Budwieser machine for RCR.

What Seacraft said is true too. Dale Jr, like his father, is the face of Nascar. If you dont like it, dont watch it. I dont watch wrestling.

Looks like we have a two-fer thread. I honestly lost interest in NASCAR after Earnhardt died, but whatever happened to Kerry Earnhardt?

Maybe he can keep the namesake with DEI as they're used to losing races anyway.

Junior won't do any better in another car. You can' t tell me that DEI couldn't give him what he needed to be successful on the track.

hehehe. Good one Bug. So somebody tell me why DEI would'nt let him race in a number 3 car? Just 'cause it was his Dad's number? Or is it some kind of superstition? Just curious because some of you guys say he will have that number with Childress if he goes that route. And, how long before he gets his own Cup car ownership?
