Default JR leaving DEI Inc??

I just saw a report that Dale Earnhardt Jr has called a press conference for 11 am on Thursday to announce he is leaving DEI along to start his own Cup team. Cars/engines will be supplied by Hendricks Motor Sports. Also Martin Truex Jr is going with him

Ya think Bud is going with him? It really was just a matter of time.

Not knocking him, but I'd like to see him drive like his dad did.

Hopefully this will give him that sense of urgency out on the track

Not sure he has the same desire and hunger that Sr had but I wish him luck.

I guess DEI is done. Big mistake on their part. DEI will go from a 100mil a year company to 0.

JR is over rated and over hyped. being THE owner and the driver will just cause him MORE distractions. I like jr and loved to watch his dad race, but there are half a dozen or more drivers out there with more talent and desire. time will tell the story here in the end.

From the NASCAR.COM site

What subject does Dale Earnhardt Jr. want to talk about?

Members of the media have been invited to a Thursday morning news conference at the JR Motorsports race shop in Mooresville, N.C. However, details of the conference were not provided, lending speculation that it may involve his contract negotiations with Dale Earnhardt Inc.

Dave Moody reported Wednesday afternoon on Sirius Speedway that speculation is Junior and Martin Truex Jr. will drive Nextel Cup cars under the JR Motorsports banner in 2008 with Hendrick Motorsports providing engines.

SPEED will interrupt regularly scheduled programming to go live from the JR Motorsports race shop at 11 a.m. ET for the news conference.

Junior's contract with DEI is scheduled to run out at the end of the season, and he and sister Kelley Earnhardt Elledge have been involved in talks with team officials. Both parties have stated in the past that they want to have the issue resolved by May.

During Media Day at Daytona International Speedway in February, Junior first mentioned his desire to obtain a majority ownership in the company founded by his father, a demand which was repeated by Elledge two months later.

"Fifty-one [percent] is the right number because that gives us control," Elledge said. "We'll take 75 or 95 or whatever we work out. At the end of the day, 51 gives you control. And we want control."

According to the Associated Press, DEI president Max Siegel said DEI has "worked hard to address everything" that Junior sought, without discussing specific percentages.

I was hoping he would take a lesson from Michael Waltrip and stay out of ownership but looks like he wants to try it himself but from what I am told his sister is very capable of running a race team

It is just business and he is the main attraction like it or not. I think DEI will go down now that he is leaving and I am sure most of the key employees (Eury's) will go with him as well as the biggest sponsor in sports Budweiser

I really had hoped to see the 3 on the track again dressed in black with Junior at the wheel. I thought this would have been a good idea for a pace car at Daytona at a minimum if not for the entire circuit after Dale died.

Then again, think about Lynyrd Skynyrd. Little brother just never did quite live up to the highwater mark of big brother, and maybe took a little bit of spotlight from him instead of just leaving things alone.

I would have to think that from a marketing standpoint, it would be counter-productive for DEI to have another driver for the 3 car. I'd bet it will never happen and the number will be retired permanently. Dale Sr. earned that much if nothing else.

TNFreebird, I agree with you 100%

All Jr can do is go backwards in the 3 car, no matter what he does it will not be as good as Sr and I would rather see him stick with his own identity. His name and who he was got him to a certain point but now it is all on his shoulders to be his own man/driver and IMHO the 3 car should be retired

tprice, looks like we're on the same page.

I wonder what would happen if Junior became so adamant about having his own identity that he legally changed his last name to Gordon?

Thats funny coming from someone who admittedly doesn't follow NASCAR. Not unless you are just trying to stir the pot...
Time will tell

as for DEI going to 0 in revenue, i think not, they still now hold and will forever hold the marketing rights the #3, the intimidator aka Dale Sr. , and his stuff sell damn near as fast as his kid.
