Default Another gas price thread-supposed $5 by Memorial day

I heard on the radio today that gas prices are supposed to go up to almost $5 per gallon by Memorial Day weekend, $4 in Louisiana.

Is this feasible?? That certainly puts a damper on the fishing season this year. Let's just hope that diesel stays low for my truck. I'm already happy that its lower than gas prices again (finally).

In 1979 President Carter said that America was facing an energy crisis and proposed increased MPG standards for cars, as well as other conservation measures.

Everyone laughed at the old man. In the 80s all that EPA crap was tossed out the window. Who needed to save gas? It was going to cost us too much money to save fuel. Why worry about it, oil was cheap. Our economic system is not very good at using less. Money is made by using more.

Well now we are starting to get an idea of what he was talking about way back in 1979. Had the focus on conservation been in place for close to 30 years who knows what we would be looking at today.

Hybrid boats that get 10 nm/gallon or better on outboard engines? Maybe. Who knows.

A lot of boats will be up for sale if gas hits $4 or $5 a gallon this summer. I am looking for another boat now, and fuel cost is a very high concern. Yea that used 25 footer walk around cuddy with the fully enclosed helm and the hardtop and the twin 200s looks nice - but can I afford to feed those outboards? Will there be any money left over for ice and beer after filling the tank?

Maybe I should just face the facts and get a sailboat

A $2/gallon increase in less than three weeks? Not unless there's a MAJOR supply interruption.

If the prices keep rising eventually it will dawn on more than a few people that there are boat loads of money to be made if they would pump and/or refine more of the stuff. A little bit later the market gets swamped with supply and prices drop. Maybe not as low as before, but lower than at the peak.

Good thing. I just won the lotto and was wondering how to waste it. Looks like I can just refuel this boat instead of buying a fleet of Vikings

We may not be able to simply pump our way out of this. Most of the homegrown reserves are tapped dry. What is left is not really enough to make much difference in the price.

Supply is decreasing, or at best remaining as it is. Demand is going up at China, Africa, and India are using more of the stuff. This means we can expect price increases.

The major demand for fuel comes from cars. Only now is there any real talk of pushing for higher MPG standards for cars. Had the nation decided to go down this road 30 years ago we would be using far less gas, and therefore there would be no supply issues.

And boats would cost less to operate, but your tow vehicle may have cost more.

On CNN last night I understood the issue to be the refineries and having issues and there are more than several that aren't functioning right now and crude oil prices are actually lower than post Katrina, The way I see it is intervention is a must, the major refineries this past year made billions, however during their money making process those billions never went into upgrading or properly maintaining their facilities, now their down and in return it cost the consumer.

If you owned your own business and had a piece of machinery that broke do you jack up your prices to help pay for the new piece of equipment?? That's what it seems to be happening which just aint right!!

I heard it on 95.7 out of New Orleans as I was headed back to Mobile from Fourchon.

That war, refinery and other analytical stuff is such crap.

The price goes up until we stop buying it. Just like boat prices - why are they so high - cause we buy them -were addicted - and the producers (suppliers) know it - duh.. Who was that guy that Reagan fired for using those terms like "trickle down" and "supply side" economics? Stockman or something - the real father of the neocon economics....crap, 20 years before Bush ... So unless we go back to the cottage industry model of real competition (the founders had in mind) in earnest (simply impossible of course with technology) - this is it my friends - get out the $$$$ - and buy BP!!! (better yet become the CEO)

Its BS! Go on the web and you'll find that all of the forecasts call for gas to average less than it was last summer, unless a major catastrophe occurs. Everyone has gotten bored with global warming so the media needs something to perpetuate thier doom and gloom. Just boat and enjoy yourselves.
