Default Hotels in Washington DC

We are vacationing this July in Virginia and would like to stay two nights in Washington DC. We are looking to stay in a good clean hotel nothing fancy needed. I know very little about the area and Hotels.com etc doesn't do the trick. I understand there are some less desirable areas in the city and we will be traveling with two children.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If Bill Clinton were still president you could probably rent the White House Lincoln bedroom for a 'small contribution'.

Try this. Lots of nice hotels in DC. Get something near the stuff you want to see. Do not get one in SE DC, or most of NE and SW either. NW is a safe bet.

Georgetown is nice but no subway stops if that is important to you, and if sightseeing, it will be.

I travel for a living...If you have an adventurous side, try HotWire. Best time to book is the day before for the best deals since they "sell" unbooked rooms at a greatly reduce price. If booking now, the deals will not be available...but you will get a room where you want. The HotWire deal works like this...you select the AREA of the city you wan to be in. Keep the search in the nicer areas and you'll do fine. Now, when the results of your search come back, I HIGHLY reccommend that you stay with the 4 stars and one's with a thumbs up "Customer Choice" reccommendation. I have never been let down and stay in rooms in MANY cities that are $300.00 plus per night rooms for $90.00- $130.00. The one downside if the "unknown" scares you, is that the the information on the hotel will not be released to you until you pay for the room.

To give you an idea...Hotel InterContinential on the Plaza in Kansas City....numerous stays. GREAT hotel... Regular price, $349.00. Hotwire $99.00. Once you learn the ropes of the site and travel to the same cities, it is easy to tell which hotel is which.

(This is only a suggestion...I do not work for ar associated with HotWire).

For the price, The Hotel Washington is a decent hotel. The location is excellent. It is right next to the White House at 15th and Penn so you are walking distance to the mall and next door to the White House. The restaurant upstairs has a great view.

Try The Mandarin. Just kidding, high dollar.

There are several Embassy Suites in DC, nice and clean, good locations, fairly reasonable.

Stayed at the Le'nfant Plaza hotel. View of the capitol and the Washington monument. Walking distance to the Smithsonian, Mall, Capitol, WM. Metro station in basement. Would go there again.

www.lenfantplazahotel.com/ They also have government rates.

I'm (we) are booked into the Holiday Inn Capital in August. Closest nicest hotel to the mall and area sightseeing. We booked a suite so we have some spead out room..

It's close to the metro, has a restaurant, bar and a pool for afternoon cool-offs.

We called our Congressman and plan to tour the Capitol building.
Any other suggestions or must sees?

Also make sure you see the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court, just behind the Capitol building. Then walk down to the Mall and visit the Air and Space Museum and any of the others that interest you. Pop accross the river to see the Iwo Jima Memorial with its incredible view over the city, take a walk through Arlington Cemetary. Take the water taxi from Georgetown to Old Town, aslexandria. There is so much to do in DC, you are only limited by time and interest.

The Marriott and Willard in the downtown are really nice hotels, although very pricey. Withing walking distance of the mall and the capitol as well. Take in the Transportation Museum if you have time. Great brick building with a wonderful interior, where NBC does the Christmas show. Wonderful marble columns inside the building.

FYI - The government Per Diem rate is 188.00 in greater Washington. Almost all properties will honor the discount if you have your retired military ID. These rates would be bookable at the hotel's own web-site, the toll free res centers or by calling direct.

Good luck!

I agree Kamper but be careful, we bring government visitors in town alot and more often then not they are "sold out" of government per diem rooms. As Jalichny said the Marriott and Willard are great locations. I prefer the Marriott for the price, but the Hotel Washington is right next to the Willard and Whitehouse and the best kept secret, and cheapest normally. Hotel is great but rooms are small.
