Default Thoughts on Vonage

I have had Vonage for home phone for over 1 year now and have been pretty happy. Its not perfect, but its saving me 60 bucks a month over what I was paying BellSouth and a longdistance carrier - maybe more. I just hate BellSouth - they constantly send me email, phonecalls and mail trying to get me back. Offering much lower rates than I was paying. That kind of ticks me off. They should have charged me those rates in the first place, but BellSouth can be the topic of another thread.

Anyway, Vonage keeps sending me deals to lower my price if I pay for a year in advance. Any thoughts? I have heard that they are on shaky finanical ground, they send me these offers so frequently its almost like a plea for cash now. Would you do it?

I've got Vonage too, and think it is great. Liked it more before they added the Federal taxes. I've got the cheapo plan and it works fine. Would hate to go back to Verizon for 30 bucks a month more.

I'm with you though, not sure I'd pre-pay until they settle the patent infringement cases, if that ever happens.

I doubt Vonage will be around in a year. Be careful.

I have had Vonage at the house and office for about a year now and love it. Saves money and work great. I especially like being able to go online and check voicemail. I think no matter what happens with the suit Vonage will be around. Between the brand awareness and the 2.2 million users they have someone will step in and buy them up if need be.

I say pay up for the year and save some money.

Thanks for the responses - I probably will. Its not so much the thought of losing the money if they go belly-up - it really isn't all that much. Its just the way I were to feel if it happend- frustrated and really helpless to do something about it (that would be worth the time and trouble)

I use it and can't live without it. Simulring alone is worth the price of admission and now I give out only my office # with my mobile # tied into it (mobile # is private and never given out so now I can switch carriers anytime without worrying about the threat of number portability BS) so it rings when you call my office #. Getting Vmails via email is great- also tied into my blackberry so I never miss an office voice mail on the road.

The only time I've found Vonage to be bad is when you have a bad DSL/Cable internet connection. My connection at home (Adelphia) stinks so I had to cancel Vonage but at work I have Verizon and Vonage works great with it.

What's the deal with the Vonage 911? I see the disclaimer at the bottom of their TV ads and I was confused. They say it "operates differently than conventional 911"

Eye,
When you call 911 on a Vonage line it goes to their (Vonage) emergency center and they route it to the local 911 dispatch. Because the line is run over broadband they are unable to trace the address like a landline. So they require you to register the address and agree to a disclaimer that it may take longer for emergency personel to respond should you have an emergency.
