I found that ground turkey instead of ground beef, more chicken instead of red meat, more water, more fruit, "healthy" cereal instead of sugar cereal, splenda instead of sugar, and less complex carbohydrates were relatively easy changes to make. They're also maintainable changes.

Oh, and a rowing machine can be used while sitting down AND watching TV!

Good luck!

I've been on Lopid (for tryglycerides) for 4 years now. Also taking Lipitor for 3 years and just stopped 6 months ago due to aches/pains and feeeling very tired.

I'm sure the Dr will prescribe a replacement for the Lipitor with less side effects.

BTW, statins work !

BTW, alcohol increases triglycerides ! ...................get the Lopid. Mine were 2000 and they came down to less than 100.

Brian

Last year after blood work my total cholestrol was 242, changed diet, ate lots of salad, fish & chicken. Lost 28 lbs, BUT, cholestrol 9 months later was 233. I wa soooo shocked! Was prescribed Vytorin, blood checked out great within 3 months and levels were well below the 200 threshold. Side efects from statins are mostly leg and joint pain/soreness. Your doctor can try different med's until they find one that works.

That is one my fears, to go on another of these elixirs that fix it all, but don't know what they really break. I have had some high cholesterol numbers in the past 5-6 years ranging from 198 to as high as 255 and I am only 37. Doc wanted to put me on meds, but I said "wait, gimme a chance to bring my health in check" so I have been running, exercising and lost about 15 lbs in the last year. I need to make another appt to see what the numbers are now so I can either continue on, or go on the pills..

Paul, I don't think I like the sound of that joint pain and soreness.. No thanks!

Beats the heck out of a heart attack. High LDL levels in your 40's are potentially deadly. Statistically, around 35% of men die from their first heart attack, and high cholesterol is the reason why.

Chris

The joint/leg pain will go away when you find the right medicine, it is not something you would have to live with.I was lucky and did not have to try several med's before we found one that worked. I could not believe after all the changes I made in my lifestyle that my numbers did not drop more than 9 points. I hope you have better results than I did!

I am on Pravastatin 40mg/day. Started taking it Nov. 2006.

It has lowered my cholesterol significantly.

Side effects?
It tends to dehydrate me or make me feel dehydrated, also muscle cramps, slight leg pain, that type of thing. I was advised to increase my fluid intake and on days when I could possibly get dehydrated I could for go the dose that day. I work out side so in the summer time it is a real possibility that I could become a bit dry. I was also advised that it could irritate my liver if I did not drink enough water.

Statins reduce numbers, not risk. Did the doctor mention that?

I am very fit for 44 (5'11", 170), had bad c at 310, tri's off the charts, very little ldl. Went on a high protien diet, low (almost no)carbs. Cut way back on drinking. After three months, my numbers were almost perfect.

Pills and the lower numbers they create may not be the best solution.

Alot also depends on genetics and family history. Mine isn't good and my mother and I see the same Dr.

Diet works for some folks, others require the statins.

Birdy:

Last summer I had a CT scan of my heart, offered at our hospital, and it showed almost no placque or obstructions. Took the results to my doctor and he looked at a previous blood test and suggested that I might want to get the bad cholesterol down from 114 to less than 70. Total was 171 and hadn't been over 200 for 12 years. Triglicerides were in good shape. Gave me Vytorin and my line reads like this about two weeks ago, total is 129, bad is 63 and good is 43. I have a terrible history in my family, dad died of heart attack at 55, weighed 155 at 5'10", mom's mother died of heart problems and mom's brother died of massive heart attack in late 40' or early 50's so anything is good. I think I have developed somewhat of a sore back, mostly when getting out of bed in the morning, but that is a good trade-off for better health. Right now I've outlived most of the males in my dad's family and plan on retiring in about a year, don't want to short myself on retirement time. Dont' short yourself either, take the doctor's advice and get the numbers down. Might also try the CT heart scan to see if there are some obstructions that need to be taken care of. Good luck.

Statins are amazing drugs. An aspirin a day is often prescribed as well.

Brian ~ Doh ~ I thought you were goin' to continue that thread line with.... Island Ferry Ride!

Bummer. However - there are WORSE things than bein' on a pill. Continue with a lifestyle change (including nutrition) and you'll be GOOD TO GO! Daddy'O did 3+ yrs. ago and is doin' GREAT~!!!

We've ALL got to remember - "Health is wealth!"

Staten drugs will effect your cognitive functions. The brain needs fat and cholesterol to operate. The Staten drugs will affect the way your body chemistry processes what your brain needs to work. Zitia works in the digestive tract without the staten effects. 500 mG niacin, fish oil and a host of other homeopathic methods should be tried first. use the statens as a last resort.

Took my stress test this morning, precautionary. The fasting was the worst part.
On Tricor statin and lost 5 LBS without even trying.
Baby steps to better health. Next on my list stop smoking!

lucky me, my doc told me this week she wants me to take Lipitor! I used to do medical transcription, and I know the side effects. I will pass on that as long as humanly possible. I am going to:

-eat oatmeal once a day

-drink red wine at night (and yes I will TRY to keep it under 2 glasses)

-start exercising.

My total chol was 235 and my LDL was 165. She said "low fat, low sugar diet -- in other words you can eat lettuce." On top of the "reduce caffeine due to the fibrocystic breast disease," what the hell am I supposed to ENJOY????

So, I'll reduce the caffeine. I found I can actually stand the taste of Cherry Coke Zero and I'll switch to Gatorade for the rest of the day (has sugar but only 120 cal per BOTTLE.) And if I actually manage to exercise, combined with the oat meal, I think that should do it without the statin.
