Default Sex Offender List, really hits home

Last night I was on the phone with my girlfriend, who lives 2 hours away. All of a sudden she let out a scream of pure terror, and the line went dead. I called her back immediately, her mom was on the house phone with 911, she could hardly talk. She proceeds to tell me about seeing someone staring into the window of the den of the house. I stayed on the line with her for quite some time, and nobody arrives to check on the situation. After 20 minutes (she lives in the county, but is hardly out of town at all, lives within 1 minute of the biggest wal-mart around just off of I95) I got on the internet & looked up the phone number for the sheriffs department there, and called up generally raising hell about the lack of response, which was greeted by pure rudeness on the part of the dispatcher. After a couple of anxious minutes on the phone, I find out that a sex offender literally lives next door to her. Upon further investigation, it turns out that this isn't one accused of indecent exposure or some BS like that, but is someone with a serious record.

My questions are this:

1) is there anything that can LEGALLY be done to strike fear into the mind of the low life next door?

2) how much of a public awareness campaign is legal, with the idea of running them off all together.

A pet is actually how she discovered that there was someone there, her kitten was acting odd sitting on the back of the couch looking through the blinds, she pulled them back to see what it was looking at & saw the guy. Needless to say, a lesson in handling firearms is planned for this weekend.

The problem with talking to him not-so-nicely is..........

What happens when you leave and she's there alone?

I like the bear trap idea............

I wonder how long 911 would take to come if they got a call that some perv was caught in a bear trap..........

If it were me.......I would anonymously plaster posters w/his picture all over the neighborhood, at the Wal-Mart, Post Office, Mall, Liquor store, etc.

A picture of him peeping through the window would be classic!!!!

The guy HAS A RAP SHEET... He is not going to be the most logical individual in the 'hood.... To fix a problem like this means to get rid of it. So, it is either your GF leaving to a safer enviornment....or if the idiot shows...action MUST BE taken if it envades her safety and privacy.

what kills me is that the lack of response by the LEO's in the area. They will litterally run people off the road to respond to a report of a questionable driver or hooker at the local truck stop, but when stuff like this happens they act as though it is a typical thing.

Being "in the country" makes it a little tough. There was a situation like this in our area. People picketed in front of the house, hung posters everywhere and got the local media involved. There were 2 predators renting a house and the pressure became too much for the landlord and they were given the boot. Some local municipalities have passed laws that are so restrictive that these pieces of trash can not live in city limits.

I owuld invest in some type of surveilance cameras and motion sensing lights. If there are kids involved they need to be aware of the situation, no matter how young they are.

this is probably a great idea.....if they ever have to call 911 again, make sure they say they have a gun and they are about to shoot him.

maybe it varies from state to state, county to county maybe, but i think in maryland they have to notify you when a sexual predator moves into your area. as a matter of fact, i was at work monday, and the phone rang.....i answered and it was an automated voice message saying that a sexual offender had just moved into the area. it gave me a phone number to call for more info and referred me to the website. i had never heard one of these messages before, but others in my office knew exactly what i was talking about. check the internet and see if you can find any law pertaining to notification of a sexual predator in the area.........maybe your family should have been warned and wasn't. that's not the kind of thing you would want to be suprised by.....

in maryland, you can go on the internet and search offenders by zip code and get a picture of them and a brief criminal history. i've checked out every town in my county.

Can do the same thing in Texas.

You can also go down to the police station and there picyures are hanging on the wall.

Here in Texas , after dark, and you don't fell that help will get here fast enough to help you
you can use deadly force to protect your self and your property [ my John Deere is going down the driveway at 0200 it's bang bang baby ]

Now violence never solved a thing. He's just misunderstood and needs a little male bonding with sportsmen in the area who can teach him about nature and stuff.

Have a couple of six packs of beer with him, and take that poor misguided soul deer hunting on opening day at the closest wildlife management area after he passes out

Oh yeah, make sure you get a deer suit that fits him.

Go to her house and pack some heat. Ask her to ask him to come over and hang a picture for her. After she gives him the hammer tell her to start screaming and you take care of bidness.

Certain parameters must be adhered to in this situation. For instance, if you kill someone invading your property it is generally illegal unless you are 'in fear for you life'. If they are unarmed, it can be subtly diffictult to convince the legal infrastructure that you were in fact, in dire threat of being killed. So, remember this phrase, " He made a furtive movement" and so you thought he was reaching for a weapon and were so frightened that you shot him in the face. Twice.
Your responsibility as a male requires you to install motion sensing lights around the perimeter of the house. It really itsn't that much trouble to put up a couple of camera's as well. They need to be recording to give proof of the violation. If he's got a record, he'll go to the can.
I'm sure they love the cat, but two women living alone with a shiitbox next door means it's time to get a dog. I've seen Labs that were fine with cats in the scene. Dog's are better than an alarm system as far as Im concerned. Good luck..

The problem is that you all are presuming the guy next door really is a sex offender. Just because his name is on the list DOES NOT mean he actually did whatever he was accused/convicted of. Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. Don’t know. Remember, we no longer live in a time where you need to be guilty of a crime to go to prison. You only need to become the target of someone with the authority to pursue a conviction. ‘Guilt’ no longer has anything to do with it.

Fwiw, it is estimated that something like 80% (4 out of 5) people on the sex offender lists probably shouldn’t be there, i.e. they probably aren’t guilty as charged or aren’t the kind of offenders that will ever engage in such actions again in their lifetime. Unfortunately, having so much flack in the sex offender list makes it hard to know who really is a serious threat, a real sex offender. Those folks are few and far between but they are the ones we need to know about. The sex offender list is mostly about politics. I wouldn’t totally ignore it but I wouldn’t take it too seriously, either.

That probably wasn't helpful. I think I'd start by going over and knocking on his door. If he seems weird talking to him, then I'd shoot him right there, on the spot, and blame it on a crazy Korean kid or something like that.

Ok, maybe I don't have such good advice. But I have some damn good single malt going right now!

i understand your point, but we're not just talking about a neighbor on the sex offender list. we're talking about a neighbor on the sex offender list who was caught looking through his neighbor's window (assuming it was him and not some other random weirdo).
