Default WE ARE TAKING YOUR CUBANS!

Australian media are reporting that due to a US/Australia refugee agreement, Australia is to take an as yet unspecified number of Cuban refugees. Details are a little hazy but it appears the Cubans are currently in some type of detention facility. What they are going to do here is also hazy. Australia tends to put illegals on remote islands in the Pacific & Indian oceans. And I mean REALLY remote. 1000 miles or more off the mainland.

BUT THERE IS MORE. YEP.THERE IS ALWAYS MORE. NO FREE RIDES.

In exchange for the Cubans, Australia is going to give the US Burmese & Sri Lankan refugees .So it looks like I am going to be able to buy some locally rolled real Cuban cigars & people in the US who currently own elephants will be able to hire handlers/riders for the big critters . And I am NOT PUI .

Asylumseekers detained on Nauru would be taken to the US and Cuban refugeesheld at Guantanamo Bay resettled in Australia under a new detaineeexchange scheme.

The agreement with the United States is the first of its kind between Australia and another country.

Thefirst detainees to be "swapped" under the scheme will be the 83 SriLankans and eight Burmese currently having claims processed by on thePacific Island of Nauru, News Ltd reported.

The re-settlementagreement will result in about 200 refugees processed in each countryevery year, and is likely to anger critics of the government'simmigration policy.

"Underthis arrangement, the US will consider people who arrive in excisedoffshore places and have been taken to Nauru for further processing,"he told News Ltd.

"In turn, Australia will consider for resettlement asylum-seekers intercepted by the United States."

TheUS is facing increased pressure over Cuban immigration, and theagreement was negotiated by Immigration Department secretary AndrewMetcalfe in Washington last week.

It was finalised at the annual Four Countries Conference in the Hunter Valley on Tuesday night.

A spokeswoman for Mr Andrews said the scheme would be reviewed in April 2009.

"TheUS referrals to Australia are likely to include Cubans intercepted atsea and currently accommodated at the naval base in Guantanamo Bay,"she said.

"For Australia, the arrangement is likely to involvethe referral of Sri Lankans and Rohingya (a Burmese ethnic minority)currently in Nauru."
