Default need insider info on New Orleans

Hey everybody,I'm taking my wife to NO for our 20th wedding anniversary in May,I am looking for some different restaurant information,we want to go to the local places, not the tourist traps,we are looking for the restaurants that no tourist would dare step into for fear of catching something, you know the kind,we have some here in Wilmington and I know a bunch up on the Jersey shore,THEY are the best places to eat, mingle and meet people, thanks for any help!

Take her to South Beach instead - IMHO New Orleans is not where you should be celebrating your 20th. As a couple after two days it will get old very quickly.

Two days max with your missus is what I would recommend. That will give you enough time to do breakfast (Cafe Du Mond), and walk the market and Jackson Square. Lunch at the Court of Two Sisters, Dinner at one of Emerilles and some of the other 20 or so I would recommed, a couple of jazz clubs and two nights of Bourbon street.

A half day at a plantation, and on a graveyard tour. A river trip, maybe to Orleans Battlefield.

After that it gets old for a couple very quickly.

I have had the opportunity to go to NO 2 or 3 times every year. Now and then the missus would go too but we don't bother any more - it just gets very old very quickly.

It's a place for the guys (or girls') trips. Not for couples past their first year or two of marriage.

However based on Chris' itinery posted above, as part of a multi city trip, they may be OK. But I'll be interested in whether or not 4 days is one or two too many.

I will be. As I said, I have the opportunity to come over 2 or 3 times a year. Now I come alone, enjoy it immensly and have even brought my kids on a cruise that stopped there.

But not as a couples anniversary destination.

Coops has the best southern fried chicken you'll ever find. It's on Decatur Street. They also have a Jambalaya with rabbit and andoille sausage that will be one of the best things you'll ever put in your mouth. You ought to try fishing out of Venice while your down here. Water is just about warm enough. Have fun, James

My wife and I have been married for 26 years and she has come with me to New Orleans during Mardi Gras every year except 2006. I agree that if you go there 3 or 4 / year, it would get old fast. Nothing changes much in NOLA and that is one of its charms.

For eating, I prefer local dives, rather than the fancier digs. My two favorites have changed recently but the Louisiana Purchase Kitchen in Kenner before they moved was awesome. Also, the Airline Highway Restaurant where parts of Monster's Ball is/was a great local dive as well.

Menzies,

He said he doesn't want to do the tourist thing! That's why you get bored, because everything you mentioned is what tourist do.

A couple of restaurants:

Victoria Inn in Lafitte- mixture of steaks and seafood. Plus a bed and breakfast.

Perino's Boiling Pot- boiled and fried seafood-westbank

Dick and Jenny's-Tchopitoulas uptown.

Things to do:

If you're in to wildlife, not the "wildlife" go to Jean Lafitte park and do the walking trails. The Iris's should still be in bloom and the rest of the animals will keep your attention.

Lafayette Square on Wednesday's has a free concert from 5:00 to 7:30.

Lucy's Surfer Bar has a great happy hour on Fridays. All age groups from 20's to whatever.

I'll think of some others when I get time.

A charter trip with Capt Rory Rorison of united charters. Well worth it if both of you fish even a little. Getting to see the LA coast before it is gone is worth the cost of the trip alone but you will also catch plenty of trout and reds. With 4 days there I would fit it in then maybe Menzies concerns want be warranted The others have covered the eats. Just be sure to get a roast beef po-boy dressed

I disagree, NO is wonderful. South Beach is full of Trannys. Maybe that's what Menzie likes about it!

Allright you people are /must be some type of sadists--- now I have to drop what I am doing and make
myself a poboy or something. I am starving after reading all of these posts.
Being a native of NOLa I can vouch for the list cgrand has compiled if you want the local home
flavor. Lived across from Frankie and Johnny's when I went to school at Tulane years ago.

More importantly you would be much better off with someone who knows where to go in the town and likes to eat a lot!!!! For a reasonable fee, airfare, expenses and the like I just may be able to go with you.
