Default FJ...I'll trade 4 bad teeth....

For 1 almost infected ingrown toenail.

OUCH!
Doc said to soak it everyday and keep a small ball of cotton under the edge to help keep it pulled out.

If you're anything like me, soaking and cotton balls don't change anything. For the past 14 years I've had chronic ingrown nails on my two big toes. And when I say chronic, I mean that *maybe* six months goes by without any pain. I've had 6 or 7 surgeries where the doctor removes the offending piece of nail and one surgery where he also put some acid on the base of the nail so it wouldn't grow back. The acid is the best thing that could have happened and it's been OK for about 4 years now. Knock on wood. When I start getting "that feeling" here's what I do: get some of the clippers that look like pliers and cut as deep and as far along the nail as I can, going into the side. Pain is the limiting factor here. If I'm VERY lucky, I can can nip it in the bud and by myself another 6 months. If I'm only partly lucky, I can trim it down far enough that it won't hurt too bad until it grows out again - usually 2-3 weeks. If I'm unlucky, I cause more damage than what was already there and it hurts pretty bad. But generally, by digging around and clipping myself, I can buy another 6+ months before a doctor visit becomes necessary. And why haven't I done the acid on the other toe? I'VE TRIED! But the damn doctors don't believe what I tell them and they say "if it comes back again, then the acid." The problem is that I keep moving to new places before I'm able to see a doctor twice. I don't get it though - the acid is just dabbed on with a cotton swab and takes maybe 30 seconds.

Anyway, sorry about your toe. I hope the cotton and soaking do something for you. I know what it's like. I will never take "no toe pain" for granted. It's been so bad for me before that even rolling over in the night and having the sheets brush against it wakes me up with pain. That was in my unemployed days and I couldn't afford the doctor. Ugh.

Can I get a side of sour cream with that?

Hey, I'm the king of ingrown toenail problems. The first one I ever had was after my junior year of HS during summer break. It was infected and hurt like hell, and it kept getting worse.

I was young and stupid, so I went to my family Dr who was old and stupid! He looked at it and said he'd have to cut it out. I'm thinking, okay, let's do it.

He lays me down on a table and takes a pair of cutters of some sort and starts in the middle of my toenail and starts cutting straight down to the quick! Then he takes a pair of pliers and pulls the half of toenail out which is ingrown! If he had hurt me just a little less, I would have knocked the hell out of him! I didn't realize what he was doing until it was too late.

My mother knew something was wrong when I came back home from his office. She said I was white as a sheet and asked me what had happened. When I told her, she picked up the phone and gave that Dr hell about what he'd done to me! He claimed it would have hurt worse if he had given me a shot because he would have had to done it under my toenail!!!

Well, about a year later, the damm thing grew back and was ingrown and infected once again just like before. Needless to say, I was freaking out at the prospect of having to go through that again, so I went to a podiatrist at Womack Hospital in Fayetteville.

I told the doctor what I had been through with the other guy, and he freaked and asked for his name and address. He then explained to me how he would treat me. When he gave me a shot in the top of my left big toe, it hurt, but nothing like what I had been through before. He said, "That's the worst part of the whole deal." I thought, cool, this will be alright I guess.

A few minutes later the Dr came in and squeezed my toe and I jumped. He said, "Can you still feel that?" I started to grab him by his balls and squeeze while asking the same question! He gave me another shot and left the room.

More time passed and he came back and squeezed again. Once again, I jumped, but this time he thought I was just seeing him do it and had a nurse shield me while he tried again. This time there was no doubt that I was still hurting when he did it again! He said I shouldn't even know I had a toe and asked if I was really nervous about the procedure. I told him paranoid would be a better choice of words.

The anesthesia finally took effect, he removed the toenail, and he put some sort of stuff on my toe to keep my problem from ever coming back. It really made me mad to know that not only did I not have to suffer that first ordeal, but there was something which would keep me from every having another problem with that toenail.

Unfortunately, I have a right foot as well. There is much more to that story, but I figure I'm about to run out of space, and ya'll might be tired of reading. Besides that, I'm hungry and headed to lunch!

I had both big toes done when I was 13 or 14. I was embarrassed to tell anyone, but when Mom found some bloody socks, to the podiatrist I went. It was very easy and pain-free. I was given shots in both toes. He cut maybe an 1/8" off either side of each nail down to the root, and applied the acid. I played basketball when I got home! Aside from narrower than normal toenails, I've never had a problem since. I'd get it done ASAP as it sure as hell beats those home self surgery sessions.

Let me just say this to anybody with ingrown toenail problems. Talk to a podiatrist and have them explain the procedure he/she will use to CORRECT your problem, not just make it go away for a while.

You heard of my first two adventures, the second being with a professional podiatrist. Unfortunately, having the title doesn't make you a professional. I ended up with an infected ingrown toenail on my right big toe (others were too) which lead me to yet another podiatrist. This guy turned out to be an idiot, and I'm still having problems over 25 years later.

He determined I had too much "meat" on either side of my toenail, and that was causing the problems. He performed a surgical procedure which involved cutting out portions on each side of my toenail, folding the skin back over, and stitching it to make it look nice and neat. Well, it turned into a mess and got badly infected. The guy had me on painkillers which absolutely wiped me out!

It took several weeks for me to get back to anywhere near normal, and the acid or whatever he used did not work this time. Now I have three toe nails on my right big toe. The big one in the middle as it should be, and two on either side which grow straight up. The one on the left side grows up under the main nail and gets me into problems about once every 3-4 months where I have to pluck it out with pliers. No fun at all. The right side doesn't do anything but grow straight up and is very small. All I have to do is trim it every 6 months or so.

I keep saying I'm going to break down and go to yet another podiatrist to have my toe fixed, but I just don't seem to get myself there. Gee, I wonder why?

Now then, ya'll wanna talk about kidney stones!!!

I also had both big toes permanently cut back when I was younger - around 10 or 11, I think. Wow, what a relief that was. My toenails look a little funny now - small "slivers" of nail on both big toes - but I haven't had any more problems with them.

Before the surgery, they got pretty bad. I had persistent infections in both sides of both toes for about four years. My medical insurance was through an HMO which meant I had to have a referral for the procedure to be covered, and my GP obviously though he was hotshot enough to cure it himself. After maybe four years of being told to "soak them in salt water, don't trim them, and put small bits of cotton under the corner of each nail," I couldn't hide how bad they had become, and we finally got a referral. The podiatrist was appalled - some of the infected tissue on my toes was borderline gangrenous and smelled like death. He skipped the consultation and did the procedure then and there.

I'm thinkin' that we should just start a thread called: "What's Your Latest Procedure"

Man - we're soundin' OLD~! HA~~!

For you guys with these bad ingrown toenails - wouldn't the "procedure" of choice be to just REMOVE the entire toenail....?? I can't imagine havin' to suffer with toe pain for years when all they really have to do is yank that puppy outta thar~ but that's just me.

Did I mention that I'm goin' in for the other tooth on the 23rd ~ ? (Wish I could find Bugbuster's toothless grin emoticon)

LMFAO........I thought I was the only idiot that didn't tell his parent's about his raging bloody infected puss oozing big toes. The doc made 4 slices, removed 1/4 extra nail on each toe, slapped a bandage on them and home I went. I have never had a problem with them since that surgery. I will never forget playing tackle football in the snow with my buddies when I stubbed my right toe against the heel of the guy I was chasing. Tears of pain rolling down my cheeks as I took off my shoe to find the sock soaked with blood....and I still didn't tell my parents....WTF was that about?

Oh yeah, after the surgery my shoes stopped smelling like a dead rat.

Get the surgery.........it will leave some really cool scars.

Dayuum, I can't imagine not having a toe nail on my big toes.

Aside from making my feet look funny, I bet it'd hurt like hell if you dropped something on that nail-less toe. Not only that, when you kicked somebody's a$$, it'd hurt you more worser than it would them! Besides that, what the heck else would you do in bed without being able to pick at your toenails?
