Default Big Apple to Big Easy (BABE) Rally

Three college buddies and I have entered the 2007 BABE Rally (Big Apple to Big Easy) rally. It's a rally from NYC to New Orleans over Memorial Day weekend in a car that must cost $250 or less. We're team #25, "Deer God" and have entered a 1982 Jeep wagoneer.

We've started a blog to keep friends updated on our progress and so they can laugh at our misadventures. The only mildly boating related thing that might interest you folks is we plan to have an online tracking system courtesy of a laptop, a Garmin etrex handheld GPS, a verizon wireless card and some open source software I found online. We'll have an icon that will update on a google map every 5 minutes with our speed and location. It works great offline so we're reasonably confident it will work once we start publishing it to the internet, but no guarantees. So if your boat is broken down or the weather is crummy over Memorial Day weekend, crack a cold one and watch our jeep move SLOWLY down the map!

Well that's different. Sounds like a hoot. Good luck.

That really does sound like a hoot!

At least you'll be headed down hill to Louisiana! If you boys are coming through TN let me know and I'll fire up my '72 Blazer and serve as an escort so you YankeeBoys don't find yourself with starring roles in, "Deliverance 2, Stuck in Tennessee".

BTW I love the name of your car, "Deer God"! You should find a set of antlers to screw into the hood.

TN Freebird - you must have read my mind. We toyed with putting a taxidermy wall mount deer head on the front grill but figured that would probably attact too much attention from law enforcement. The truck won't be as "art car-ish" as some of the other entries as we plan to sell it once we get to New Orleans and fly home. A set of nice antlers drywall screwed to the A pillar is definitely on the "to do" list. Thanks for the escort offer - I saw your blazer in a previous post and it's a beautiful truck. The rally route goes through Deals Gap so that ought to be worth the price of admission to see a bunch of ratty cars try to be sports cars.

There are a bunch of pics on our blog and an explanation of the name "Deer God", but here's a pic of our rig -

Hell son, if your route takes you through Deal's Gap I'll ride the Hog up to see ya'll take those things through the twisties!

Unless my memory is failing me, isn't Deal's Gap Hwy 129 which comes out of NC and dumps out just below Maryville, TN? If so, we call that "The Dragon" around here, and it's famous for high flyin' crotch rockets which are frequently found in the trees having given their rider a head start toward Heaven. Those less fortunate miss the trees and get a head start toward someplace a bit south of Heaven if you know what I mean!

That road ain't for the faint of heart or the loose of wheel or short of brake!

We leave on Weds for the start of the rally. If anyone is bored or curious, check out the right hand side of our blog and follow the instructions to link to the real time tracking website. There is only testing data from May 14th up right now (you may have to select May 14 on the calendar and then press update map). During the rally, every three minutes (barring any computer or jeep problems), you'll get a pushpin of our location and speed on a google map as we head from Staten Island to the Big Easy.
