spent an hour tying to figure this one out.

=IF(D7="","",RIGHT(D7,SEARCH("/",D7)))*1



A free beer to the first one to give the correct solution...

ok marker - that chit doen't mean anything to me - is that a sloution?


I know what I did to fix it, and talking about text within a text wasn't it...

mine too...

we were trying to pull a value out of something like this

ie/ 12


the letter represent a job type and the number is the time units allotted to the job.

type that into your D7 cell - make sure you put in that space between the / and the 12

What is the issue Joe - you are trying to search for text within text?

yes. I actually have it figured out, just want to see how is geekier than I am....


we pull info from a program into an excel sheet - most formatted as text or text and a number as text in this case.

I do need the number to to some other stuff with it, and we can have several hundred of these so manually doing it didn't work.

I figured out a base formulae that did work, however if the D7 cell was empty it returned a #VALUE, then the rest of my formulas reading those cells were returning errors. And I like a clean spreadsheet hence the if statement.

not the one I did - but I also had issues on another formula that read this result - I ended up doing a helper cell...


I'm going to give this one a try - I might actually owe you a beer....
