Default Rainbow & Rock & Roll

Hell, looks like we have some pretty good rock and roll fans out there. I'm a rock junkie myself despite the Skynyrd handle.

Anybody listen to Rainbow?

Anybody want to talk about lead singers in that band, or do any of you know who Rainbow is/was?

Any Ronnie James Dio fans who know what the heck I'm talking about here?

Ritchie Blackmore rules, LA connection is my favorite Rainbow tune
Blackmore is my all time favorite lead guitarist. You might want to check the title of your favorite Rainbow tune. I'm not exactly an expert on Rainbow, but I don't remember that title. Could you be thinking about "Lost in Hollywood"? That one rocked for sure! Which album was "LA Connection" from? Not trying to sound superior or nuthin' as maybe I just don't remember that one. Who sang it?

Blackmore's solos had an unmistakable signature sound. I saw Rainbow in concert in Nashville, TN opening for, would you believe, "Oreo" Speedwagon. When Rainbow left the stage, we headed toward the car as the show was over! They started out with, "Kill The King" which rocked big time! Too bad the auditorium was too small for them to put up their "Rainbow" which spanned the stage where they were the main attraction in Europe. Cozy Powell was one hell of a drummer with some hellaciously fast footwork! Too bad he croaked a while back. Blackmore could do a weight watchers commercial himself these days as a before picture! Look who's talking, I've put on a few pounds since the 70's myself!

Blackmore was just too cool on stage. He had a presence about him that borderlined cool and evil, but damm that boy could rip a Stratocaster like nobody else. He really came into his own after leaving Deep Purple to form Rainbow.

Okay, so far one Rainbow fan down, how many to go?

Anybody besides me know who know who the three lead vocalists were for that band in order of appearance?

It was on long live rock and roll, came out in 78 or 79 I think, I'm pretty sure Ronnie did the vocals.

Yeah, Dio did vocals on that one, but that album was a little off IMHO. I have the vinyl version packed away someplace, but now I do seem to remember that one sorta, kinda, maybe.

Alright, lead vocals for Rainbow, Ronnie James Dio, Graham Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner!

Neener, neener, neener!

Now that one I am not familiar with at all.

I remember "Final Vinyl" which I have, and I ran across another greatest hit type CD in Bradenton a while back but was too cheap to buy the damm thing. It was an import as I recall and ran about $30 bucks, but I never saw it before then.

I kind of lost interest in rainbow when dio left, the sound wasn't quite the same. They cranked out a few more killer tunes but I don't think the band was the same after that.

Yep, Rainbow sorta lost itself and became a little too mainstream when Joe Lynn Turner showed up.

There were some damm good songs like "Jealous Lover" which many folks never heard. Turner was a helluva vocalist, but Dio was a madman. I don't know what happened to make him leave Rainbow, but "Rainbow in The Dark" sure was a kickass song which seemed to carry some hidden meaning about that.

Dio is great all by himself and his last 2 CD set of greatest hits rocks big time!

So who was fronting when they did "Stone Cold"? I remember the video on MTV all the time. Good stuff, Dio has got one of the biggest front man voices of all time, for a guy thats like 5'4".

Actually, he's looking pretty slim for an old rocker- he drinks at my local occasionally...

LOL It's been a while since I saw footage of Blackmore but I can't remember when it was.

Maybe he's dropped a few pounds since then. I see you show NY as home, but I assumed Blackmore was over in England some place. The one concert with Rainbow is the only time I ever saw him live, and we left the concert when the "main" attraction hit the stage. We hoped to get lucky and find their bus or something, but no such luck.

Does Blackmore ever play at your bar or any place else these days?

I think too many people judged Deep Purple by, "Smoke on The Water". DEFINITELY NOT an album to remember compared to those that followed, especially where Blackmore was concerned.

If you ever run into him again, tell him "Freebird" said "hey"!

He lives right up in Port Jefferson, if I am not mistaken. I think Dee Synder lives up there as well- we have a lot of old rockers here on my Island for some reason.

He hasn't ever played at the Sage, other than noodling on the piano, and while he has been there a few times for Karoke night, I don't think he's ever sang there. It's a pretty laid back place.

Sorry if this is out of line, but mentioning Dee Snyder in the same thread on Ritchie Blackmore is like making the comment that Rosie O'Donnell as a great personality when we're talking about Kathy Ireland!

I'm planning a trip up to NY later this spring sometime so tell me where to find your bar either here or on a PM. I'm going to try to fly up to do a meet and greet with some other members of the HOF who I have yet to meet in person. There is another underground activity in the works for that trip, but I am sworn so secrecy! You never now who might be lurking around here!

I don't recall Blackmore doing anything in terms of vocals with previous bands, but I'm sure the guy could sing if he wanted to. Same with keyboards even though I have no memory of him playing. I remember Tony Carrey on keyboards with Rainbow who went on to have a little success elsewhere.

I wonder why Dio left Rainbow? He certainly went on to be an icon for hard rock. That evil little troll sure packs a wallop with unbelieveable range when he wants to show it! Take a listen to the old Deep Purple tune, "Mistreated", on the Live & On Stage album from Rainbow. David Coverdale is a great vocalist, but RJD blows him away on that tune for sure!

The 'Local' for me is The Sage Cafe, in Bluepoint (actually, it straddles the Bluepoint/Bayport line) on Montuak Hwy, SSE of MacArthur Airport. The area is kinda the begining of the East End, so if it's the boating that you are looking for, it's a good place to fly into. First round is on me- the party never gets smaller.

And at least I didn't mention Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Maiah Carey, Debbie Gibson...

Damm son, you could have gone all day without mentioning those last few.

I actually called a local rock radio station a while back and asked them if they had gotten some really good deals on some old worthless rock? crap. They had started playing Billy Joel's Still Rock & Roll To Me, or whatever the name of that song was!

I reckon I wasn't alone because that crap didn't last too long!

I'm actually headed onto "Wrong Island" if the trip comes through, so maybe I'll just take you up on your offer as long as you don't mind hanging out with some old farts who ride around in Hatteras yachts!

PM me your info or call me Monday 800/251-9992 and I'll keep you up to speed. Oh yeah, tell Blackmore he's more than welcome to attend!
