Default Rotten f*&^

Ok, so I've been looking at a few boats lately. Older Shamrocks. I was going to hold off a year to buy a another boat due to everything around here, but I saw a few for some nice prices. One popped up Sun night on one of the usual haunts. Asked for pictures, says he's ready to deal, new boat on the way, blah, blah, blah. Original mail he gives me bottom price. So I ask questions, certain concerns. All's looking good, motor and trans got yanked in Jan for little work, redone teak, looks clean. I shoot him a mail asking for an address for a surveyor to show up, said I'll buy at agreed price (pending results of survey), but I want his word he won't sell it to someone else if I pay for a surveyor. Is that so wrong???
Now he's coming back saying the price was suddenly more, it is what it is, someone from CA might fly in to get it, Whoever agrees to the new price he'll hold it for. So I send him his original mail, NOW, he says, "OK, you got me". Now that there's interest in his boat he's trying to get more money. Now, he says someones coming in Sun (from his area) to look at it. If this guy doesn't buy it, then he'll sell it to me for the lower price. Even though I was the first guy to call on it.
Real F*&king stand up guy.
Now there's no way I can buy it. How can I??? I can't trust him.
Glad I didn't drive to GA for nothing.
Sorry, just needed to vent.

If he didn't accept a deposit, I would say that is business, although not the best.

I just sold a boat that I held for about 2 weeks for a buyer from CA with no deposit, and I could have gotten more $$ and took a while to get payment, but I trusted the guy and kept my word. He had a friend pick up the boat that was local that I somewhat knew.

If it had been under more shakey circumstances, I would have sold the boat to someone else. Without money changing hands, the deal is still open.

It just kills me people doing things like this. Obviously, his word doesn't mean sh!t. Can't trust anything he says.

I WOULD HAVE given a deposit. I agreed to the price. I talked to him ONCE on the phone, and asked for pictures, and we'll go from there. I would have called him, instead of via e mail but I'm just getting better from pneumonia and I was in no mood for phone calls. But, I stayed in touched via e mail.

When I sold my boat, I had someone call and say "I have cash, I'll buy it tonight" for a higher price. But, someone else came forward first, so he got it. There is no excuse. I always grew up being taught you don't go back on your word. Be a man.

My guess is the other buyer hasn't mentioned a survey, and the seller has less risk with the new guy of the deal going south. Also, having sold a few boats myself, I've had my share of "I'll be there at 4:00" and nobody showing, and "I'll get a loan on Monday".... - you get the picture. Those experiences have tainted my view of everyone, and I'm wary until someone actually shows with cash. This guy is probably tainted the same way and you're suffering the effects of all the rest of the BS'rs out there. Turn the tables - if you want the boat, haul a$$ over there and beat the other clown to it.

Guy looked at my boat and wanted to give me a cash deposit since it was Saturday and the bank was closed. I told him to keep his money, a handshake means more to me. He was back at the house Monday after work with a bank check in hand.

Keep ya head up, the right deal will find you!

There are two sides to this coin. Side one: The seller is told a buyer wants it and to hold it until he can drive down there to pick it up and pay in cash next week. The seller never hears from him again and loses out on a prospective buyer. Side two: the buyer is a standup guy who will honor his word and pay for it , but the buyer doesn't trust him. I think side two applies here. But, since the buyer did not receive a deposit from you, it's time for you to forget about it and move on. And, you don't have a deal until you have a deal (i.e., signed and with a deposit).

There are all kind of good deals out there Tinman. If you'd of bought this and it went sour, I know the little woman would remember forever . Did you buy her a digital camera yet??

Keep looking. The worlds so full of A-holes, that its counter productive to get upset over the near misses.

Actually, side three: I'm asking for an address so I can shuck out $400 to send a surveyor. Wouldn't one think that would show that I am interested? If I agreed to the higher amount he said he would hold it. What does that show me??? That he's trying to renig on the amount HE told me to get more. I flat out told him I had the money, everything was set pending the results of the survey. I did seem to strike a chord when I asked about the tanks. They're about the age most Shammies get replaced.

I'm sorry, I have high standards when it comes to myself, and people around me. If someone here says they are going to send a surveyor to my boat and would I hold it if they do, you d@mn skippy I'll hold it. Because I gave my word. It's just sad when a 48 yr old man tries sh!t like this. No honor. If I'm spending money 1100 miles away, I'm obviously not a tire kicker.

So do you still like the boat but don't want to pay the higher price, or do you not want to buy the boat because the guy screwed you? I would say if you like the boat then wait to see if the other guy craps out. If so, then when the guy comes back to you, tell him that the price just dropped twice as much as he raised it. Now you're in the driver's seat. You will either get a better deal than you originally expected, or you can walk, like you want to anyway. Either way you win.
