Default Water Proof Cell Phone

I was watching MSNBC earlier this morning and they had a guy showing a new phone from Casio that is water proof and has shock absorbers so it is "impact resistant." Apparently the military tested it.

They have a website showing off all of its tricks.

http://www.casiogzone.com/

Who would buy one or wants one?? Seems like it would be attractive to the fishing crowd.

Verizon has offered it for a while. That shock absorber only works if it drops straight down. I have seen a few with the broken shock piece. I was not impressed. It is Mil Spec. like the NExtels, but who would want one of them? It also does not offer bluetooth.

The water resistant/proof Casio G-Shock cell phones have been available in Japan for several years. Very small market for them -- big compared to any other cell phone, short on features. Very, very durable. Did I mention they are ugly as sin?

I have had one for the past 6 months. I've never "tested" its ability to withstand water and have not dropped it either. I figured that this would be better than a "typical" cell phone since I'm around water.

I also only paid about $50 or so for it with my renewal contract, just like any other phone.

Also, it absolutely does have bluetooth. Bottom line is it's a fine basic phone used on the Verizon network.

I have the GZone and have had and tested it for a year now.

It has been dropped 6-ways till Sunday and once from at least 6 feet onto an outdoor shower deck as it fell out of my shorts pocket, no problem.

I wash it off with the hose, it sits on my boat dash on nasty days where I'm getting spray into the boat, or while it is raining out, not a single issue. It is a rugged phone.

The phone is no bigger than any other clamshell phone. Ever since the Coast Guard called me after my neices idiot friend pushed the DSC button on my VHF, I'll never go on the boat without it.

If RIM comes out with a waterproof version of the Curve, I am there!

I am on my 3rd one now! I swear the hummidity down here turns the little white sticker red.

At least that is what I have told AT&T twice....

If you are looking for something to protect your phone, you can try Otter Box. They offer waterproof cases.

I got the Verizon GZone also. I got the orange version but wish I'd scrolled down a litle further and gotten the silver one with black grippy trim.

If you want to get some laughs, watch peoples faces when you use it to mix your drink, or swish it in a bird-bath to clean it.

Based on past experience, the insurance (3rd party to the carrier) will drop you after a few claims.

i have the black casio. i liked the orange but like the rubberzied feel of the black one better. anyway, ive have it since april. i like it, but i havent really 'tested' it. i have dropped it a few times. and i think ive run it under water a few times to clean it. after watching a friend drown his bberry, i wanted a phone i dont have to worry about. i have a bb from work, so this is my personal cell, and dont use many of the features, so something simple. it came with an extra battery, which seems to last forever. the regular battery is ok, but im in the habit of charging every night anyway. because of the extra battery, i didnt buy any extra chargers, etc. really bugs me that they dont have standard connections. the phone has an electronic compass and flashlight. i acutally find the flashlight handy. speaker can be a bit iffy at times, supposedly because of the water resistant 'stuff' built into it. i wanted the phone but i wasnt going to pay $400 for it. i watched it for a few months, saw it goto $129, too much (i typically dont pay for phones with the contract renewal deal). anyway, i logged onto my verizon account one day and saw it for $29, so i bought it off their site. had it delivered i think next day and for free.

Does the G Zone have an external antenna jack ?

I need a decent phone with an external antenna jack for the boat.

Thx.

No. It's not really that good for mixing drinks with, either.

I have had one for almost two years now. Best and toughest phone I have ever seen!! We have about 35 of them in use in our company, (construction) and have not had a failure yet.
For a bar trick I will drop mine in a picture of water and have someone at the bar call me, I pull it out and answer it. You would be surprised how many beers I have won with that one.
I have the one with the "role bar" and clip it to my belt loop with a carabiner.
