Default hughes.net users - are you having any problems?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are any of you having problems connecting during this cold weather?? The last four days (since the really cold weather has been with us) we have not been able to get online most of the time. We get on for a couple hours during the middle of the afternoon (warmest) but it has been very very slow. We called Sunday after the game and after testing everything for a good half hour, she said we they needed to send a repair man (our cost). I told her to wait with that. I asked if the cold could be the problem but she didn't know. She's probably in India. It wasn't on until 1 or so today and we had it for a couple hours then was gone. It just came back but I don't know for how long.
We don't know anyone else who has it.
So, I was just wondering if anyone else was having the same problem. Thanks

I'm not on Hughes.net, but on Starband, a similar satellite system. Cold weather should in no way be causing you any problems, if your dish is properly aligned. Heavy rain or snow can sometimes causes loss of signal as it does with satellite TV, but this is only a temporary condition. I don't know where you are located, but if you are in an area where a build up of snow or ice can accumulate on the face of the dish, this too will cause signal loss problems.

Thanks VAman. We are in Wisconsin. We check the dish everytime it snows and remove any. We have never had a problem with snow and have never had any build up on either. It was warmer yesterday and we were able to stay on for four hours. It wasn't as cold last night, thus warmer this morning and I was just able to get on (4 1/2 hours earlier than yesterday). You wouldn't think the weather would cause it but nothing else has changed and like I said, it works for a while when we get above 0. Right now it is very fast.

I had direcway... now hughes for about 5 or 6 years and had good service. I had other friends who had major problems with them and they aren't known for their customer service....

It is really cool how you are connected... your signal goes to a satelite that stays in one spot over the equator... then gets sent to Gathersburg Maryland.... then out to a server.. back to Gathersburg..... then back to the equator..... then back to you in Wisconsin. If there is bad weather over Gathersburg it can take the whole system out even though the sun is shining over you...

It may also be that the cold weather throughout the country is causing people to stay home and use the net thereby loading the system to the max... .or beyond.

Also make sure you haven't been FAP'd.... if anyone in your house is downloading large files or music or video you may be exceeding your limits and causing the system to screach to a hault until the appropriate time has elapsed.

Richard, thanks for the reply. Maryland - I was wondering where it was. No one has been downloading lately. I volunteer at our local library one afternoon a week and you are right, the cold weather has more people using the internet. We have had four times as many adults using it the past week and a half and they say it has been slower than normal. It's getting warmer and we are able to be on a little longer every day. I'm just going to wait and see. Hate to spent $150 plus on a service call if I don't need it.
Thanks again.
