That was a close call...

It does point out the need to carry a 1st aid kit on board

Wasn't there a video we watch here a few years back where the guy got speared by the Marlin?

Also a good reason to have a complete First Aid Kit onboard.

Wish the video showed more. From the sounds of it after someone seen the aftermath, it sounded like something more than you could just rub dirt over.

… And I'll be carrying my own first aid kit from now on." It turns out the boat was stocked with only a rudimentary first aid kit. A more severe wound might have been lethal that far from shore.

This is one part of that story that was not lost on me.

Note: that video is from 2005.

If the boat had a "rudimentary" first aid kit then they likely had all they needed. Unless someone has special training more advanced equipment is usually useless. For most injuries the only thing bystanders can do is apply pressure to bleeding. I would consider a rudimentary kit likely to have some gauze to apply pressure. A more severe facial injury may require management of the airway and this is difficult even with trained people and all the right equipment.

What is needed on a boat when running offshore? Lots of gauze, pads and duct tape and people willing to apply pressure to a bleeding wound.

I carry "comfort" supplies to remove hooks and sew up minor wounds so we don't have to ruin a trip by coming in early. I've thought of keeping IV supplies but if things are that bad I'll be begging for a helicopter to come rescue the wounded or ill person.
