Default Have You Deleted Facebook?

I am done. I created an account back in the college days in order to meet new people (this was back when you needed a .edu email address to join.) Today I am getting zero benefit from having an account.

This is what my news feed looks like on any given day:

1. Pictures of peopleís kids. All babies look the same. Any kid over the age of 12 who hasnít hit a home run yet isnít getting that baseball scholarship.
2. Pictures of peopleís pets. Your cat is only lying next to you because itís a warm place to be until itís next meal.
3. A news story about Cuomo/Trump/any elected official along with the political banter that is associated with any of these posts. Enough said.
4. Sensationalized weather posts (sorry local news, 1-3Ē is not a storm nor should you be shutting down covid vaccination sites because of this.)
5. Valentineís Day posts/people sharing pictures of themselves hugging and kissing their significant others. 50% of marriages end in divorce. Sorry ladies, but that guy you met on an online dating app six months ago is highly unlikely to be your ďsoulmate.Ē
6. Carmax/Carvana/Any automotive ad for a vehicle I was googling ten seconds earlier. Itís amazing how a website that was designed to bring college students together has morphed into a publicly traded company that exists solely for collecting and selling our personal data.
7. Humblebragging about buying that new car/house/boat/atv. Letís be honest, you overpaid and now want consolation for your purchase.
8. People posting pictures of themselves exercising or at the gym. Congratulations on doing something youíre already supposed to be doing. And donít try to sell me on the latest workout drink that youíre affiliated with.
9. Pictures of food/eating at a restaurant. Usually associated with tags of girlfriends and then some inside joke in the comments. Nobody is impressed and the food looks terrible.
10. People You May Know. I havenít talked to these people in over a decade, and I could go another 10 years without speaking to them.

What else am I missing?

This is why I don't have any friends on social media. I just use it for the boating, woodworking, reloading and other hobby groups.

But, but, but, you're so good at it...

I canceled Facebook years ago and never really did much with it when I was on it, this is still social media.

I guess the only one you left out was reading about people's whining over why they hate social media.

The groups are definitely still useful. I was able to diagnose an issue with my truck and boat faster than forums.

Did you just make an account so you can join groups? Thatís actually a really good idea.

Been off for a long time. You do miss community events, since that's how many of them advertise. But overall I'm happier for cutting out socials.

When I became a manager I dropped my old account to not be associated with the sometimes toxic and crazy people you know and created a new one under an alias which is pretty just used for groups. Im friends with my sister so I guess that counts for using it for people but not with old highschool friends, old coworkers or any of that nonsense.

had an account for years, but never posted anything, never posted my photo or any details. Thought I might use it for work, etc., but it has limited usefulness for me. That being said, I've been told that facebook marketplace is one of the best online marketplaces to sell certain items. Have used it successfully - seems to be taking the place of craigslist for certain goods.

I havenít sold anything on there, but I will admit I did score some nice items buying from marketplace. Itís also nice to see who youíre (allegedly) buying from as well.

Was on it back when it was a college thing. Was pretty cool then. Watched a real change during and after the 08 election when people started turning on each other and fighting. In 2012 I asked myself what the heck I was doing. I had a ton of friends on there who I really didnít know but found myself all the sudden caring about their business. Deleted in 2012 and never looked back.

Fast forward to 2018 and we moved 1000 miles from home. Family begged us to start a FB to share pics of the kids. We started a family only page under an alias. Close family and best of friends only. Maybe 40 people. Lasted for a bit but once Covid and elections came around I realized how screwed up my family is. Deleted again and lesson learned.

If they canít call, text, or email then they donít need to know whatís going on with us.

Facebook pretty much killed the fishing message boards. Have to go on FB to get any fishing reports now. . .

My feed is all dogs, fish and boats. . . :-)

You can clean up your news feed a TON by installing FB Purity on desktops or laptops. They don't have a phone client TMK yet. I didn't put FB on my last phone update and never will.
I use it almost exclusively for fishing, boating, dogs and a few friends, and not much else. If you don't 'Like" everything in the world, and know how to manage it, you can very much limit your content to what you want and little else. And I get NO ads now.

That said, it is the incarnation of the devil I believe.
