US Math, 2007

Math 1950-2007

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help . While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Teaching Math In 1950

A logger
sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Teaching Math In 1960

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Teaching Math In 1970

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number
20.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Teaching Math In 1990

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our
woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes?

(There are no wrong answers. )

6. Teaching Math In 2007

Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

She's thinking, "What are pennies and why didn't you use your debit card?"

Did she text-message her manager to get the answer

She probably took the job because the cash register reminded her of her PSP.

I feel your pain. Lotsa gadgets, but not a lot of thinking in our next generation.

Technology is the knack of arranging the world so that we don't have to experience it.

Currency is a "medium of EXCHANGE" !!!! At the drive thru and at the counter....after ordering..
When cashier says "X" amount of dollars and cents please....I calmly say, when you hand me food
I will hand you money....if I pay early,........I want a discount...

I once refused to move from in front of the window until I received my order, warning they can and will call the police.

I live on the road - I live by this rule....

I do, however, intentionally do the change thing just to try to make someone think once in awhile. My first two years in the working world was at a convienence store and my manager always made us count change, even though the register would tell us the amount if we hit the right buttons. I didn't know you could do that for the first six month I worked on that machine.

I also still always face my money in the same direction. and make sure they are in the correct order in my wallet.

myself and some friends have a game going on at MC Donalds.

try it next time.

Order a dozen of Chicken Fingers or half dozen, most of the workers reply:

We don't serve a dozen, only 6 or 12.

:roll

Did you know they are testing remote drive through attendants. The person is sitting in India or another state taking your order over VOIP. They are testing the outsourcing of order takers in several states to include Oregon.

Great it's hard enough to understand an American over those stupid squack boxes, never mind an outsourced voice over seas somewhere. Not to mention aren't cows sacred in India?? Can imagine the horror when you order their sunday prayer up for a double stacked lunch burger with cheese and bacon.?!
