Default Son has yet to qualify at gun range. Police academy..help

Have no idea how to help my son, very hard to watch. Hes in the last term of the police academy and in 3 tries he still hasent qualified on the range.

Hes actually a good shot but this is now all in his head. He cant seem to qual on the 15yrd or 25yrd ranges. They use Glock 19 gen 5. His own gun is a sig which he shoots very well, and thats what he gets to carry when he graduates. This glock really has him beyond puzzled. He absolutely hates the grip and they wont let him change them.

Hes got one more chance on Monday and if he fails that I think hes done. So much pressure, thats what this is all about now.

Any help is appreciated.

I'd get him with a range officer that gives classes... and get his confidence level up. IMHO, that's the best bet.

How is he failing? Shots all over the place? Does he know how the sights work on the test gun? Is he struggling with hand placement on the different weapon?

They've been working with him for three days now. Hes always been very good under pressure. That's why this is so not like him.

Hes been shooting with me since hes been 5 years old. He owns 2 handguns, no glocks. Gonna take him to the range over the weekend and shoot a glock.

With a Glock, have him try taking shots "single action" instead of double action. Don't let the trigger reset after the first click. See if that makes a difference.

Also don't change the squeezing force of all fingers when squeezing the trigger.

You can also try a different grip.

Low left. Too much finger on trigger and or loose grip with left hand. Not taking up slack in trigger before shooting. Just spit balling usual causes.

Are the guns used in the test range guns ? Or did he shoot the same gun every time he's failed ?

low and to the left is trigger control issues..

Have him practice dry firing the trigger over and over to become more familiar with how it breaks. Glocks have horrible triggers if you're not used to them. Make sure he recognizes where the trigger reset is and learns how to deal with the take up or creep

If the shots are all in the same general area, that might suggest the sights need to be adjusted. Is there another handgun of the same model available for him to shoot, or to use in practice? Not familiar with the Glock specifically, but some handgun sights can be adjusted for windage (L/R), but fewer are adjustable for elevation (up/down). If there is not another firearm available, he might just have to change his point of aim on the sights in order to pass the test.

Just tell him to aim just high right and move on. You have to learn where the gun shoots, not where you shoot!

For OP try the old range trick where you hand him the gun, every now and then unloaded and see if he is pulling gun/trigger wrong or something along that line

I have done this with deer rifles to show people they are flinching

I can’t shoot that blocky plastic thing worth a damn. I’d do better throwing it at someone.
the 92fs on the other hand I can hit plates at 100 yards. Have him try using a 92fs. It’s an easy weapon to use and get used to quick.

First,,,,,,thank your son for even wanting to become a LEO in this day and age. More are quitting every day because of the utterly ridiculousness that is BLM. Then add in cell phone cameras recording every time a LEO has a confrontation with a perp. It's hideous what this country has become.

Anyway, I say this in ALL seriousness,,,,can he delay taking his final qualifier which would allow him to borrow a Glock and practice practice practice? I'm in NC but I would be willing to bet someone near him has a Glock G19 they would lend him for practice. I have such respect for LEO's that when a friend of mine told me a month ago that his son enrolled in the local BLET class at the Jr. college I gave him a G17 that I didn't need. I have no children to hand my guns down to so I was honored to give this young man his first Glock. Someone on here will offer up a loaner gun I bet. I hope he can delay the final shoot. All he has to do is say he was exposed to someone with the scamdemic and he has 2 weeks to get ready. Seriosuly.

Prayers for him to get it this time.
