Very sad. Those majestic animals are trained, whipped, drugged and beaten to make them do things beyond their capabilities. He will not be the last. Have friends that are involved in the rescue and adoption of grayhounds from the dog tracks. I am not a PETA person but there has to be limits in some situations. RIP Barbaro.

They couldn't just retire the horse and let him roam a pasture for the rest of his days? What was the reason for killing him?

That's the problem, he couldn't hardly walk..horses are very fragile animals, and if one leg goes wrong, the horse in in trouble. If he wasn't worth the millions that he was, he never would have made it off the track.

Two points
The horses at the track that are treated well are the lucky few that are fast. Once it's proven they won't be a champ, they are used up and disposed of.
In this particular case my hat is off to the owner. He would have made plenty if the horse had been put down at the track (insurance). Once they leave the track the insurance is normally void. There was no financial incentive to do what he did. The horse was a GELDING.

He actually wasn't a gelding, and he was worth MILLIONS! That doesn't take away from the fact that the Jacksons are good people, and they did all they could to save him.
