Default New College of Florida

Anyone live down Sarasota way? I'd like some info on this school as my son is interested in doing Marine Biology and applying there.
Extrance requirements seem very high - 3.96 GPA was the AVERAGE GPA of all applying freshmen last year. Also looks like he needs SATs around 1400 in Math and English combined.

Never heard of it. If he is interested in marine biology; University of Miami Rosensteal (sp) school is one of the top internationally.

Here's what I know of New College: It was independent until finances required that it become part of University of South Florida, which holds down tuition, but they have their own admission standards. Those 3.96 and 1400s seem a little high - I would have guessed 3.8 and 1300. There are no majors; students get with their committee (undergraduate committee, just like in graduate school) and discuss how to accomplish the student's goals. Each student does a senior thesis. Oh yeah, it has one of the highest levels of marijuana usage of any state university in the country - second only to that hippie college in Northern California.

Oh, great. So on the upside it has good standards, on the downside he could spend the four years getting high!

Thanks, I think!

It's a very liberal school. Know a few people that went there. Not sure of the academic standards. As far as Marine Biology / Oceanography, may want to look at Florida Atlantic University and Nova Southeastern University. Nova is my alma matter, but it is not the school I went to. It is now a truly respectable institution with first class amenities.

I worked with some people from FAU's Ocean Engineering program on AUVs. Top notch work.

And if he wants to get stoned, thats gonna happen no matter where he goes. Wouldnt worry bout it.
