Default Rally the phone company.

Stopped to talk to an Embarq phone tech the other day. Asked what it would take to get DSL to the house. He said the best way is to rally the local, not so local, neighbors to call the customer 800 number. They have a future DSL file they track related to area, zip code and address. Once they see 20-30 inquiries it then gets the higher ups attention. The station is 500 yards from my house and ready to go. Just needs the equipment installed. I would have to canvass an area of two miles to get to 30-45 houses. I am not paying for satellite internet so its not an option. Thoughts? I feel like I am living in 1907...

In what God-fosaken burg do you live ????????

That has to be unbelievably frustrating not to be able to get broadband.

Just so you know what is available outside the 3rd world - I have cable and DSL that are load-balanced on my router.

Hey - I don''t have all second to switch between THT forums

Don't feel alone in that boat, Brian.....we're on dial-up too in these parts and I'm lucky to connect at 31.2Kbs - that's the HIGEST it's ever been....

We'd have to canvas about a 5 sq. mi. area to get enough people for DSL or whatever.

Hey - maybe between the two of us we could run a string through two cans and get faster service that way.....

SIGH.....

I too suffer from dial up only access. No cable and no DSL (too far from the switch , i guess). Have looked into satellite modem, but now considering verizon wireless access. get rid of my ISP provider and one phone line and cost isnt bad at all. can set it up for wireless access to other 'puters in the house too.

I to tried to get DSL at my house about a year ago, but was told it was not in my area. (still not in my area) So I went with Comcast broadband, I have heard a lot of people say they have had trouble with Comcast, but I have not had any problems myself. (Other than the price being a little high.) If anyone is having a problem with Comcast, what kind of problems are you having? I was just wondering if it was just in certain areas with line problems or what.

Lack of signal about 1/3 of the time. When it works, it's fast. Their service is beyond horrible in theis area. Most of the techs speak little English

I've never had a problem with Comcast. My family got it in our house back in '99, and for the entire time I lived at home through college it never went down once.

I got a letter in the mail the other day from Comcast advertising a special - Unlimited local/long distance phone (w/ voicemail, caller ID, etc.), high speed Internet, and digital cable w/ HD and three premium channels for $129. I called up and got it at my place, and my Dad called and got it at home too.

Using Wugnet as a benchmark:

http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp

Comcast in NJ comes through just now at 2.786 Mbps, slow for cable, but way faster than my Maryland DSL service. OTOH, I'm not in MD that much anyway, and the monthly savings is huge, so DSL is fine for me down there.

In MD, I have in a 2-unit attached house. The buildings on either side of mine are identical to mine. Both of these neighbors have DSL. I have DSL. The neighbor with whom I share a common wall, was told by Verizon that he was too far from the switch! It took him 2 years to finally get DSL. Go figure.

I think I will call Comcast Monday and see if I can that deal in my area. It would save me some money.

I just used T3's speed test & found (on avg):

Download / Upload

Comcast Cable 5 MBs / 420KBs

Verizon FIOS 3 MBs / 100KBs

Comcast is faster but less reliable at my house

When comparing speed, be sure to use the same test.

Here are some more "tests" and each one will give VASTLY different results for your connection. Just be sure to use the same test each time. The differences in results will amaze you.
