Question for Yankees?

Why do you call cooking hamburgers hot dogs or steaks on a grill BBQ? BBQ is smoked pork, ribs, chicken, brisket, etc. Is that just the media and TV show writing? I went to visit my wife's family in Connecticut and we went to a barbecue for a fundraiser. It was chicken, and there was no barbecue sauce whatsoever that's not BBQ. And her family had no BBQ sauce at their house either. I just shook my head. Have you not seen the 9,000 shows on BBQ on TV?

I don’t get it either. I hear them say “We’re going to have a barbecue” Barbecue is not an activity or something you do, it’s something that you eat.
Hamburgers and hotdogs are not BBQ. That’s what you throw on the grill when firing up the grill or grilling out.

You need to get out more often-In different places all over the country and the world things are different. Think of it like the english language-words often mean different things even though they are spelled the same.
Like in Hawaii just talking to one another is called talking story-hey its not about a children's book its like that with BBQ all over the planet.
Embrace the diferences .
The south does have the BEST BBQ on the planet-no question about that.

Go look up the definition and you’ll get your answer. It’s akin to y’all southerners complaining about northerners and saying that’s not how we do it up here. Just because the south does a BBQ one way doesn’t in and of itself make anything else not a BBQ. Just to be clear in my family at least we don’t ever refer to it as having a BBQ, we just call it a cook out. Even if I do happen to be throwing a brisket on the smoker or some chickens. Usually a whole hog done over wood fire is called a pig roast around here.

News alert, news alert:
Different areas of the country use different words to mean the same thing. Soda vs. pop, grilled vs BBQ, you all vs. y'all etc.

Born and bred Memphian here, I KNOW BBQ and it CAN'T be done with a gas grill nor can it be done with anything BUT pork!!!

Yanks, what do you expect, they move down here to escape the politics up "norf" but they continue to vote like they did up "norf".
And while we're on the subject, they are called COKES, they are ALL "cokes". They aren't "pop" anymore than they are "soda" or anyother foolish names they call them up in snowdiggerville. When asked, "What kinda cokes ya want?" THEN is the appropriate time to proclaim what kind of coke you want, like Coke, Dr. Pepper, Root Beer, RC Cola etc... (And before you ask, NO self-respecting southerner drinks or even says the word PEPSI.)
Glad we could have this discussion!

Terminology does not change the activity, a BBQ here is simply cooking something (usually outside) over a gas/wood/coals heat "grilling" but grilling to me is actually placing something under heat (broiling) the concept of cooking a big chunk of meat slow, can be called BBQ, smoking, slow cooking.

BBQ Down south ? just go to the Zoo, A Southern zoo has a description of the animal on the front of the cage, along with a recipe.
They call them BBQ grills, So anything you cook on them is considered having a " BBQ " where I'm from.

I moved from Long Island NY to North Carolina, In NY My vote would never count as the state would be Blue no matter what. I'm proud to say at least my vote counted this time as North Carolina is Red. As for many other Southern states, look in the mirror Bubba.

Why do southerners stick a chunk of meat on a regular roll, add cheese and call it a cheesesteak? WTF is that.
We were in Boston a few years ago and a not so smart west coast husband of my wife’s friend busted out this gem
”If you think this clam chowder is good, you should try it in New England”.

I don't understand why anything can be called "cheesesteak" unless it's a slice of cheese, similarly, "chicken fried steak" it's chicken or steak, pick one. I see on TV shows people getting some kind of burger and pouring a bucket of some kind of melted/runny cheese slops over it
