Default St Augustine Florida - Lay of the Land

My step son is moving to St Augustine to complete his studies at the Univ of St Augustine. Would like to know the areas where he should stay away from. He is looking at Ponce Harbor Apartments and other nearby apartments. Is this a good area? What areas of St Augustine should he stay out of? Any general information would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Well, if you can find Cracker on here, you could get some great answers. No one is sure where he went.

That area is behind Walmart off Moultrie. The road is less busy than US1. In general st augustine is an overall safe town. Crime is rising as the population growth is explosive and normal precautions are good enough. Keep doors locked, windows closed, etc. Lots of car break in's from unlocked vehicles.

Not too many bad parts of town, but if it looks shady, it is shady. Lots of new construction to pick from that's for rent.

Been here since 1989 and love it..... other than the crazy growth.

It's a Publix and no pawn shops.

It's a small private school I've been here for quite a while right next to Flagler hospital

A lot of students at USA rent condos at Villa San Marco, on Old Moultrie road, right behind the almost defunct mall. Very safe and convenient to the school.

I think you want to stay east of the rr tracks. Family has owned places at the beach for over 30 years. The traffic drives me nuts now and downtown is ‘crowded’ but it’s a great place.

st aug beach is about 15 min drive, check out the ocean gallery for rentals. Pretty big property on the ocean. Looks like he’s not far from the beach over 312 bridge.

That's not close.

I live downtown and there is a pawn shop 1 Mile away. Should I worry? Silly criteria

Not a lot of pawn shops anyway.

Look and see how many pawn shops, titty bars and check cashing places there are in the area. None, you're golden. One of each, not terrible. Two or more, start worrying. Three and up, run. These numbers may also be any combination of the three added together.

Not really, but if there is 5 within a mile of each other ,i would.
i should have been more specific .A large number of pawn shops per population.

Your son will love Saint Augustine. I feel like I'm vacation everyday. Fish the intercoastal, fish offshore, sand bar hopping, nice beaches, great dining, generally nice people, cool state parks....list goes on and on

That’s the west king area. You guys would figure out pretty quick not to rent in that area.

Don’t bother looking for a titty bar, we don’t have any. The last one went broke when the girls were so ugly nobody would go. The County code prohibited them from selling alcohol, and seems like people didn’t want to eat breakfast with a naked waitress.
Our Hooters even closed! When you can’t make money with scantily clad girls selling wings and beer, something is wrong!

In laws lived in Lincolnville area (Cedar and Sanford) and had to pay attention where we were heading, but never felt unsafe. Lots of kids going to Flagler College renting in that area.
