My kids really want an Oculus for Chanukah but there is one major hang up for me. Oculus requires a FB account, which I am NOT AT ALL OK with my kids having...period the end. Not happening.
So...Do any of you know if there is another way to use it without having a FB account, or is there another VR Headset unit that doesn't require a FB account that is also good?

Why not create account but don't let them use it for anything?

I think only the Oculus Quest 2 needs the Facebook account, you can get the Oculus GO or the Quest 1 without a Facebook account.
Minor issue there is the Quest 2 is the best/newest out of all of them.
Maybe you make a Facebook account and activate the Quest 2 to your account?
I do agree with you its BS you need the FB account but there are really no other options unfortunately

We just got one and were very hesitant for the same reason. Neither my wife nor I have FB (or any social media accounts for that matter). I created a FB that was only tied to me and locked all the "sharing" features of the Oculus down. So far so good, our Kids are 9 and 11. I will say that after getting it up and running I do recall seeing somewhere in the settings that you can in fact use it without but I can't remember for sure.

Assuming your kids want a tethered VR headset that plugs into a gaming pc and not one that plays games on its own, I'd support another manufacturer that isn't tied to facebook like HTC or Valve. If they want a standalone like the Oculus Quest 2 I don't think you have any other options. You could make a burner facebook account but they are supposed to be tied to a real name so they could shut it down. They have been very sketchy retroactively adding the facebook requirement to headsets people already bought, so I would assume any Oculus product will need a facebook account and it may have to be a real name. You could still lock it down pretty well and keep tabs on it so they don't use it for anything else I guess. Still I'd rather support a less slimy company if possible.

Once it is linked they (or me) do not need to access FB at all to do anything. In fact I have not been required to visit FB since creating the account (about 3 weeks ago)

You need a fb account to set up the oculus. The fb account and oculus will be linked but the kids will not have access to fb through oculus from my experience. If i am wrong someone please correct me. Im like you, I do not have social accounts. My wife has a fb account and i used it to set up our kids oculus. I have used the oculus and i have not seen access to fb through oculus. When i set it up i believe it gave me options to add fb friends, post game play, and maybe couple other fb related things. I turned all of that off. You have an option to add a code to prevent game buys and downloads.

We use these in a professional setting. The HTC Vive is currently a better product.
This stuff is changing rapidly; and I'm mostly using Mixed Reality (not Virtual). It'll all be a novelty until the resolution gets good enough to read a business card at arms length, which is supposedly 8k in each eye. I was playing around with a prototype the other day; and they are getting there pretty quickly.

We used my wife's FB account to setup my son's headset. You do not have to access FB once setup but it is accessible. You can even go Live and share your screen.
If you can look past the fact it supports FB, it is amazing technology.
