Default Swarming termite question

I have a stump in my yard that is covered with swarming (flying) termites. I can see the larvae. What should I do? Let them stay and eat the stump - which is okay - or eradicate them?

Be a Redneck for the afternoon if you already aren't one. Get out the gasoline....a lot of gasoline and have a cook out! I'd kill them any way I could in fear of today in the stump and tomorrow in the house! I'd burn that stump out to China.

Kill them with some hot water, poison or fire, but know this.. The reason Termites swarm is to divide the colony into smaller pieces. Or to put it another way, the colony has gotten so big that it needs to spread.

I look at swarmers as a blessing - why? Because if you didn't see the swarmers, you probably wouldn't know that colony was there to begin with...

The key is to keep them away from the house and make that stump pretty undesirable too.. My recommendation is to poison the living crap out of that stump and spray a very heavy dose along the foundation of the house. If you have the time, dig a small trench around the foundation so the poison can pool and soak down. Repeat in a couple of weeks and then every quarter for a year (spray the yard too).

That ought to take care of 'em...

Do you have a well at your house? If you do, be VERY carefull about applying any gasoline or poison around the stump.

Use diesel fuel to burn the stump instead of gas. It works better because it burns off slower I think.

And I believe a bit less explosive.

The Terminix inspector came by today and said no worries, although she said her boss suggested burning it was an option, but there are, on average, 3 swarms / acre, so it would be only a matter of time before another swarm came by.

I would not waste poison on the stump. Termites live below the frost line and above the water table and tunnel up to the food source. Placing poison on the stump will save the stump but will only divert the termites to another food source.

By the way they have been known to travel at least 100 feet from the nest in search of food. You might divert them into something you want to keep for a while. They are one of the oldest creatures and have perfected altering cellulose.

Anything you do to the stump will only kill a small portion of the community. The best thing to do is protect the house (defense) if it is in their scope.
