Default 14 week old golden retriever

My family adopted a 14 week old golden yesterday from a military family at the naval base in Groton, CT.

He seemed fine and we are taking him to the vet tonight, but our concern is that after walking with him for a length of time, his hind legs seem to lag a bit. Not sure if he is tired and his muscles are not that strong yet or if he has a problem with is hips.

We have all of his papers and lineage and my wife was able to track down the breeder last night and said that no hips problems would be noticed until 1 year. He went on to tell her that his mom and dad were healthy and that no hip problems are in the lineage.

Just looking for your thoughts before the vet visit tonight.

BTW he is absolutely gorgeous. Now if he could hold his pee until he gets outside.... ( we will work on that and figure it out).

He has made my 8 year old girl and 5 year old boy already very happy in one evening and the trip to the bus stop this morning.

Thanks to all who respond.

hip dyplasia wouldnt manifest after 14 weeks, i dont think
however, you vet will be able to tell you if the breeder has a history, if the breeder is well known
good luck!

I would guess that Homeboy is probably just tired.. Heck if I were 14 weeks I would be worn out too.. Heck I think I'm worn out right now!!!

Do you know who the breeder was? If so, see if the parents had an OFA (Orthapedic Foundation for Animals) certification. Any reputable retriever breeder (or most large dogs for that matter) will get the OFA certification. It won't guarantee 100% that yours won't develop displaysia but it does improve the odds dramatically. You can even get yours x-rayed at 2 years old and get the certification if you ever decide to breed.

BTW, there ain't nothing as cute as a Golden puppy.

I agree with the pup being just tired, my pup did the same thing at that age, woohoo a walk lets go, and after a short time I had to carry him home. Have the vet check him just to be on the safe side however.

Agree with James and ECMatt90. How lucky you are to have a Golden. These are wonderful animals and endearing family members. Mine passed away 5 years ago at 13 YO. I still miss her and wish for another, but health of my wife precludes it.

not much to input except good for you for adopting. we adopted our golden last year and she is wonderful. i would agree with the others about not worrying about it too much. sounds like he's pooped!

My previous dog was a doberman/shepard mix and I got her at about 6 months old. First couple times I took her for long walks she started getting wobbly and nearly passed out. I think it was just too much, too soon, and she wasn't used to it. Wasn't long before we could go for real long walks with no problems, I think it was just a matter of building up strength gradually when they're young.

Thanks for the good wishes.

Just got back from the vet and he is perfectly normal.

Good breeder, per the vet and his papers. He just gets tired. He is 30 lbs at 14 weeks with big paws. We are looking forward to getting him house trained and enjoying the next 15 or so years (hopefully more) together as a family. I really want to get him out on the boat.

Goldens really are sweet animals.
