Default Gambling Bad Luck Stories

I know I am a terrible gambler and do not do it any more. Never was big into it, but enough times losing hard-earned money was all the hint I needed.

At a fiend's house years ago with a bunch of guys and they want to play cards. I say no thanks, I suck at gambling. My buddy tries to get me to play, but I resist. He says he will put up the first $20 for the pot. To teach him a lesson I agree and tell him kiss his $20 goodbye. First hand I get dealt a great hand, straight flush. I use my poker face and play coy. It is early so I just match bets. We go around and one guy who has a horseshoe up his ass all the time ends up going all in. Bold for the first hand, but I think I have him and call. What's the one hand that can beat mine? Yup, exactly what he has, royal straight flush. No one at the table can believe it. I turn to my buddy and just say, "Told ya." He says something along the lines of that never should have happened and I must really have done something to piss off the gambling gods and to never gamble again.

I think there is some alternate universe where I am a gambler and end up at the wrong time and place and get killed. This life is to avoid that. haha

I knew I should not have married my x-wife. Even at the wedding, my buddy said to me something along the lines of If you want to hop in my car and we just leave we can do that. I rolled the dice and it cost me 5 years of my life.

I am no gambler.. First trip ever to the ponies, Calder Park, SE FL, 1980. I bet the daily double. First race my horse was a huge Longshot and he won. Second race my horse was the favorite. Going to be a big payout. Coming down the backstretch, my horse takes the lead and starts to pull away.
My buddies and I are already for a paid trip to the local ballet. All of a sudden the jockey starts crop whipping the horse in the face and side of the head. The horse stumbled, almost throwing the jockey. You could hear the entire crowd gasp. Horse finished next to last.
It was years later when the big scandal came out aboot jockeys throwing races at Calder.

Been to Vegas about five times, last three didn't gamble. I'll play gin for a penny a point but that's about it.

Used to play nickel-dime poker with my Dad and brothers. That is the extent of my gambling. Just doesn't interest me but I have nothing against it.

Still not boating related but it’s a miracle, a comment from Bernie outside of the bilge.

My ex-wife's sister used to produce news for a Vegas TV station, so we used to go out there from LA every so often to see her. Damned if she didn't win a jackpot on dollar slots almost every time - small time winnings, but I think we had every one of those little trips paid for but maybe one.

Me, I know better - I lose every single time...

There was a guy in philly in the 60's, the Furrier for the entire region. Besides selling minks, he housed many a fur in off season cold storage. I mean THE GUY......Well he got this idea. He sold everything, none of which was his, and went to LV. Lost it all. Hundreds of ladies lost all their furs. I believe he ended up losing his life......

My wife and I used to go to LV quite a bit on business. I liked blackjack and played quite a bit
we were in the Bellagio going to see a show and had 20 mins so decided to play a couple of hands and have a drink. Got a couple of aces with the dealer showing a 4, split the aces and got another, split it again. Doubled down on a couple of the hands as the dealer had a 4 and ended up with 2 20’s and a 19 and about $500 on the table. She turned over a 6 and an ace. Haven’t played since. Oh, and it all happened in about 69 seconds as I was the only player.

Grew up with an old nickel slot machine in the basement. Played nickel dime poker in my younger days.
Being in the construction biz most of my life, I gambled just about every day including some big bets (or bids)
Never saw a need to gamble at a table when odds are never in your favor

Haha, I could write a book.

I am and have always been a gambling addict.

I love to bet on anything.

Knowing a possible loss will put me in a bind is the drug. Some of us never learn.

I don't gamble but years ago when I was in Reno, the only thing I won was the quarter I put in the public pay phone that kicked the quarter back when I placed a collect call to the wife.

Never bet against the house.
Every so often when I am in Vegas I will get in to a poker game, something I can live with like a $500 buy-in hold-em, I rarely lose and never win a lot.
I play in a monthly game with friends, $100 but-in can re-buy for $50, dealer's choice the games a mostly hold-em, five card stud, seven card stud and Omaha, I never lose a lot or win a lot.

I used to love playing the nickel and quarter slots. All that jingling and jangling as piles of coins come spilling out was music to my ears. I played one of the ones with the card, never again, no cascade of coins, no bucket of quarters. It was like using a defective ATM, that removes the money from your account until it's empty.

Was fishing with a guy in a pro-am bass tournament a couple years back. Usually the fishing is slow after 10am so you just share your life’s story.

This guy fell out of the bad luck tree and hit every branch on the way down. Mother gave him up for adoption at birth. Adopted parents died in a car wreck in his teens. Two best friends committed suicide, son broke every bone in his body in a motorcycle wreck... I mean it went on and on and on.

But the icing on the cake was he was married to some no-good, cheating worthless woman so they get a divorce. She somehow gets half his stuff. A year after the divorce is final, the ex-wife wins the New Hampshire powerball - $500 million. He doesn’t see a dime.

Yet through all that - the divorce, the deaths, the almost comical levels of bad luck - what really broke his spirit was the amateur in the back of the boat that day outfished him! Had to literally beg him not to throw his rods in the water and leave early so I could weigh in!
