Default I hope this never happens to me

So. I like to tie one on once it a while. Also, like many of us I've probably driven when I should not legally have been driving. That was in my younger years. What I came upon last night sure made me shake my head. Never have I ever been this intoxicated (especially not behind the wheel) and I pray that my life never takes a turn to get me to this point.

At about 10:30 last night the wife mentions that there has been a car in front of our house for too long. We are on a rural road. Not heavily traveled. After this vehicle sitting there for about 20 minutes I get suspicious. He isn't even pulled off the road. Just in the middle of the road. Lights on. Foot on the brake. I grab a flashlight and head out to see what the deal is. I find this poor guy passed out drunk in the drivers seat with a miller light spilling in his lap. Car in gear. Foot on the brake. Wife said he had moved about 20 feet from when she first saw him.

I was worried that if we woke him up he would take off and hurt someone or himself so we called the police. I did try to open the door to at least put him in park but the door was locked. While waiting for the cops (he has been sleeping in the middle of the road now for about 45 minutes) his foot slipped off the brake and he did a slow roll into the 1' deep ditch where he stayed until the police showed up. This did not wake him up. The cops took him in and impounded the car without incident.

I felt bad for the guy. Not because he got caught, but because of what must be happening in his life to get to this point and make these choices. I cant imagine what drives you to this point.

Also, really damn funny story to tell. Must be one hell of a hangover to be that drunk off miller light.

Miller Lite was just to wash down the oxycontin.

I hadn't really thought of that, but it's certainly a possibility.

Its probably me being naive but I don't really ever think of that out here. Its a rural town. Big properties. Nicer houses. He was driving a pretty new car. This aint the ghetto but I guess its everywhere.

Was given 26 shots on my 21st birthday. Friends put me to bed. I woke up at 4am, truck running, in park, in the middle of a trail through the woods. Our rent house was on acreage; and I never left the property. I'll never know what possessed me to wake up and get behind the wheel, but it really scared the $hit out of me.

Can I ask you why you've done this?

You did the right thing. Imagine how you would have felt if he ran his car through one of your neighbor's house.

As other said, hopefully that experience was a wake up call for him.

You can ask, but I don't have the answer.

Nearly the same thing happened to a good friend of mine. Here's the story:

I was a bartender. Buddy stopped in for a few drinks like usual on a Friday night in college. I got off about midnight so we headed over to another bar in town where we were good friends with the bartender. We had a few drinks together and I decided to get home. My friend closed the place down and had a few more drinks I'm sure.
Next day he comes in to the bar (he worked the door). Tells me he woke up in the hospital handcuffed to a bed but nobody knew what happened except that he was there for DUI. Here's where it gets funny... a couple guys walk in the bar and yell out "Hey Jason... how you feeling man?" My buddy had never met them before, or so he thought. Turns out they were the EMT's that were at the scene with him the night prior. They told him about how they found him passed out in a ditch after getting off the highway. They said the cops were called because he was in his car at a stoplight at the off ramp for the highway, passed out. When the cops got there they knocked on his window, he woke up for a second, took his foot off the brake, passed out again and the car slowly idled across the road and down the hill into a ditch. Then they busted out his window, stuck him in the ambulance and took him to the hospital.
It's a funny story now, but man that could have turned out way, way different.
The good thing is that it was a life changer for him. Never seen him drive after so much as a sip since.

I think the question is better phrased "Why would you do 26 shots?" and the answer is still

Ambien is terrible in this respect...….
Story 1: Before I totally raised hell with my 2nd wife's doctor and made him quit prescribing her Ambien......I wake up from a nap with smoke in the living room and my eyes and lungs are absolutely on fire. I jump up and run into the kitchen to see my wife standing there with a spatula in her hand dripping in molten plastic. She points to the open door of the microwave and says what is that. She had microwaved a Tupperware bowl of spaghetti to the point of completely melting the bowl. Next day she never remembered a thing.
Story 2: Got called in on Jury duty. I usually get bounced up front because lawyers absolutely hate white male engineers over 40. I end up being picked probably because the prosecution wanted what they perceived as a Law & Order type and the defense wanted people with family members who took Ambien. So the judge had asked at the first of the voir dire if anyone knew the defendant and I said no. The woman was a Pharmacy Tech and worked for a big chain. They had gotten into a personnel shortage in my area and she had been working 12 hour days for over a month straight. She finally told her boss she couldn't do it any more and needed a few days off. Her boss agreed so she went home ate a big meal and took some Ambien. Another store ended up short handed and the pharmacist (who just saw she wasn't working) called her up and told her she needed to come in to his store. They found her parked on the shoulder of the I-20 interchange ramp, engine running, asleep behind the wheel wearing pajamas a bath robe and fuzzy slippers. The whole first day of testimony the longer it went on the longer I felt like I knew her but couldn't place it. I woke up at 3:00 AM that night and realized she was the ex-girlfriend of a guy I worked with and I had probably been for dinner or drinks with the two of them at least a dozen times. Next morning I told the bailiff I needed to speak to the judge. He asked "privately before court" or "after he comes in". I said before court. Bailiff came and got me a little before court and I went in the judges chambers and told him I knew the defendant but had not realized it. He asked if that would prejudice my verdict. I said I did not think so but I was really concerned about the appearance of impropriety. He agreed and sis why we keep two alternates. Told me to leave out the side door and thanks for my honesty.

Never buy a house across from a T junction of 2 roads.

Twice......a house on the street where I grew up ended up with a car in their living room over 30 yrs. Where some drunk a-hole just couldn't stop at the stop sign and turn , and continued right across street, thru front yard, into the house.
