I have a very good friend who came from nowhere and made his fortune when him and his wife started carving and selling their own candles in the 80's. Came up with a couple great ideas and they took off. His business grew to over 100 employees and a factory in Lynchburg. His business name is Old Virginia Candle Company.
Anyway....I love hearing about individual success stories. So...I know many here are well off and was wondering if you would share your success story. No....not looking for braggarts but just thought it would be nice to read that America is still the country where anyone can become wealthy.

You dont just have to be an entrepreneur....my nephew has moved up nicely in the corporate world and his degree is from an online university.
He has a great imagination, business sense and the personality to grow whatever business he has been involved with. By seeking out smaller companies he has profited when they were sold and he was either promoted or involved monetarily in the buyout.
He will retire long before he hits 55.

No way to answer this without being accused of the THT humble brag... so I'll just say a good day job, which has allowed us to invest in a variety of types (SFH, MF, industrial, etc.) and structures (personal, LP's, etc.) of Florida real estate.

I worked for a guy who I considered a friend whose father owned a bakery . Father didn't like getting up so early to make dough so figured out he could make it the day before and chill it in coolers then remove , allowing to rise and bake . My friend and his brother took that idea and started selling chilled dough ... for example supermarkets for their fresh bread . They invented the chilled bread dough process/market . He told me by the end they had a machine that would make 10,000 dinner rolls an hour . Ended up with 3 factories , East/West coast and middle America somewhere , then sold business to Pillsbury or Heinz (can't remember) . I worked for him after this had occurred - in his 50's ? We used to fish a bunch together . I ask him why he started another business and he said the only part of his plan he didn't think through was the part where he was retired with 2-13 yr old boys and a 11 yr old daughter . A Very very kind , smart and generous man who valued his employee's and liked Contenders .

Not sure that I have a fortune....or ever will for that matter. I am rich though. Rich with the best family and friends anybody could ask for.
So how does THT define a "fortune" monetarily?

Grateful for my grandmother's relentless pursuit to find the best possible husband/father for her kids. She was a widowed mother with 2 young kids in her 20's. Picked herself up by the boot straps and went into modeling, ultimately met a man 40 years her elder who had amassed quite a fortune. They got married, he adopted her kids, and the rest is history. I won't forget and always remind my kids, can't take it for granted.

Bull Sh!tted on my resume to make it sound like I completed my degree than after I had enough experience that no one cared about degrees anymore I dropped it. I would not say that I have massed a fortune but I do better than most, I have done well enough to be in the 32% club which reminds me. I need to start a failing business next year so I can have more write offs and get out of the 32% club.
