I will be flying into Raleigh this weekend to see my son who is 16. Because of COVID it’s been a while and he usually flys down to Florida and we fish, sand bar etc. I am curious of things to do in NC for the weekend, not apposed to traveling a few hundred miles as well. He will have a friend so looking at either the coast and hang out on the beach or head to the mountains.
Any thoughts from some North Carolinians. Also heard Asheville is pretty cool but never been there.

Asheville is very liberal and very shutdown currently. If it was me I’d head to carteret county and enjoy a few freedoms. (No mask nazis, open outdoor eating and drinking )

Nothing but Rain this Weekend in the Mountains.
Outer Banks, Custom Sound Fishing Charters, Capt. Cato outta Hatteras, if your son enjoys fishing.

Asheville restaurants open and downtown packed on weekends. Yes it is liberal, but aren’t most places nowadays?

Absolutely outer banks !! So much to do if eager to go and do , also can do little to nothing and post up on the beach and chill . Even surf fishing in OBX can be good . I have had more success surf fishing in OBX than anywhere I have been on the east coast . Ashville is a freaking hot mess ... I am there weekly for work and despise it to be honest . Plus as was mentioned mountains are getting dumped on this weekend . Wife and I cancelled weekend in Fontana and driving the dragon this weekend and opted for the coast .

You are from a hot humid climate. If it were me, I would ride 3 hours to Boone. Check the weather, which is usually 72 degrees and zero humidity this time of year. Lots to see and do off the blue ridge parkway. Whitewater rafting is darn good as well. We floated the new river and the water temp was 60 degrees. spent a week in that area in June and had an amazing time.
PS- Asheville sucks.

This forum lol. All the tough guys so triggered over a mask or a hippy. Asheville is awesome, has great restaurants (Tupelo Honey, The Admiral, Curate), a world class brewery scene, an arts district, Biltmore Estate, adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway for scenic drives or hiking, close to Dupont State Park with great bike trails and bike rental outfits, Comedy Bus Tour that's pretty entertaining, amazing zip line courses, ropes course for teenagers and more. Boone/Blowing Rock area also has a lot to offer. Great hiking, biking, whitewater rafting all over western NC. I'd normally go mountains because the weather is epic this time of year, but check your forecast.
